Mid-South Archaeological Conference

The Mid-South Archaeological Conference was established in 1969 with the notion that an annual regional conference on the archaeology of the Mid-South would encourage syntheses, increase cooperation between interested archaeologists and institutions, and produce a published account of the current knowledge of Mid-South archaeology.

The Mid-South is an informal venue -- a "working conference" where raw data can be disseminated and discussed, where new techniques can be presented, and where a common body of knowledge about the Mid-South region can be brought to bear on common problems and issues. Small regional meetings like the Mid-South have assumed increasing importance in the profession of archaeology, as larger regional and national meetings are forced to go to shorter and shorter papers and increasing numbers of concurrent sessions. The Mid-South has long been noted for its informality and manageable size that permits the free exchange of information and ideas.

The Mid-South has no annual dues, no formal membership list, and no officers. What is does have is a long tradition of interested colleagues that have continued to "come together" once a year to share information, ideas, and comradery.

These web pages are my contribution to keeping the notion of this meeting alive and well.
