Three Most Useful Things I Learned
I learned may useful things in Dr. Hopper’s Learning Strategies course, but the three most useful to me were how to use recitation, distributed practice, and selectivity to study for tests.
Recitation has helped me out because I learn best by listening and when I need to remember important information I make a song out of it or say the info out loud.Recitation is saying information out loud in your own words to help you understand it better and by making a song out of things I need to understand that is exactly what I am doing.
Next, another one of the three most useful things I learned in Dr. Hopper’s Learning Strategies class is how to use distributed practice. Before taking this class I used to wait til the last minute and try to cram all the information I needed to know for a test or quiz into my memory by studying right before any test I would take.Dr. Hopper taught me that if you study your notes right after class, then again before you go to class, then again before you go to sleep at night, then again the next day, then again the next week that you’ll remember and understand all the information you could possibly need to know. This will happen because you’ll be using your long-term memory, which can hold numerous amounts of information, instead of your short-term memory that can’t.
The last most useful thing that I learned in Learning Strategies class was how to use selectivity when it came to studying for tests. Many teachers give you an incredible amount of information that they tell you to use to study for your test.I used to try to remember everything before the test day and would never really get the big picture. I always tried to remember everything.Dr. Hopper taught me that if you use selectivity that you will remember just about everything you need to know.Selectivity is where you examine your notes and decide what is important. After you have found what is important; you focus most of your studying on these parts, and try to see how the smaller details fit in with these categories.
I’ve learned many things that are going to help me graduate from Middle Tennessee State University in Dr. Hopper’s Learning Strategies course, but the three that are going to help me the most are how to use recitation, distributed practice, and selectivity to study for my tests and quizzes.
