Management, Organizational Leadership Concentration, M.S.

The Master of Science in Management with a concentration in Organizational Leadership at Jones College of Business offers students a comprehensive program that enhances their planning, communication, and ethical decision-making skills. By providing real-world experiences, the program prepares students to develop into successful managers who can thrive in different types of organizations and advance to higher levels of management.

Upon completion of the program, graduates may secure mid-to upper-level management positions in various industries such as healthcare, distribution or logistics, manufacturing, not-for-profit, state or local government, and service industries such as banking, insurance, and real estate. Studies suggest that effective leaders possess task- and relationship-oriented skills and demonstrate active participation. While a leader may emerge from a group of loyal followers, it takes a special set of skills to create and maintain structure within an organization, while also motivating the team to succeed and working alongside subordinates to achieve shared goals. A strong leader prioritizes the needs of the team, and a successful leader ensures that all members remain focused on the task at hand. Therefore, leadership and followership are complementary, and a successful leader needs to possess specific qualities that enable them to inspire, motivate, and guide their team toward success. Upon completion of the program, graduates will be well-equipped to lead teams and organizations in a rapidly changing global business environment, with a deep understanding of management principles and the ability to inspire and motivate their teams toward achieving organizational goals.

Caroline Acree's Story of Success

Caroline Acree was drawn to the M.S. in Management's Organizational Leadership concentration because it included everything she was looking for to "catapult [herself] to the next level as a marketing leader." During the program and still to this day, she found herself "consistently working to improve [her] behaviors based on [her] class learnings." She most enjoyed noticing that her thought processes were expanding to include out-of-the-box ways to support her team. She became excited to "share [her] master's education with the team at HealthStream," where she currently holds the position of Senior Product Marketing Manager for the Clinical Development vertical. She hopes to continue a career in marketing or a similar field, "aligning myself with charitable missions and innovative companies who work for the greater good."

He is a team player and leader

Shaine Bates earned his B.B.A. degree in Entrepreneurship at MTSU, but when he learned about the new M.S. in Management with a concentration in Organizational Leadership, "I knew I wanted to be a part of it." Bates enjoys working with small teams and growing a business, and he knew his graduate degree would give him the skills and knowledge to lead teams of creative and innovative people to even greater heights. Today, Shaine is manager of photography at Jack Daniel's Visitor Center, and he also oversees the company's bottle engraving services. Shaine speaks highly of his MTSU education and professors, who, he says, are tough, great motivators who set high expectations. "I hope to start a new business one day, but until then, I want to continue working with Jack Daniel's to create innovative new ways for customers to experience the Jack Daniel's Distillery when they take a tour."
