A century ago, an interracial group of
Americans joined together and formed the National Association for
the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The story of the NAACP
is the story of a universal struggle to create and maintain equal
citizenship for all Americans. It is a transnational narrative
that binds human and civil rights struggles in the United States
with the aspirations for equality and justice in Latin America
and the Caribbean. The centennial of the NAACP is an occasion to
highlight issues of race and citizenship in the Americas, from
the experiences of African-Americans and African descended people
in the Americas.
