Cytotechnology

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This program prepares an individual to become a cytotechnologist in conjunction with an approved school for cytotechnologists. The program includes six semesters of the medical technology curriculum at Middle Tennessee State University, completion of an approved school for cytotechnologists and return to MTSU to be awarded a baccalaureate degree.

The University of Tennessee Memphis Health Science Center offers a program in cytotechnology.

EMPLOYMENT OBJECTIVE: Cytotechnologist

DESCRIPTION OF HEALTH CAREER: Cytotechnologists are clinical laboratory technologists who are knowledgeable in the preparation, evaluation, and accurate diagnosis of cytological material. The cytotechnologist must be proficient in microscopic interpretation of morphology of cells from parts of the body. Techniques of specimen collection, preparation, and staining are required, as well as record keeping procedures, filing, and methods of quality control.

LENGTH OF PROGRAM: 6 semesters of Pre-Cytotechnology Curriculum at MTSU and completion of one year at an approved cytotechnologists program.
