Freshman Admissions: How to Apply

If you are a high school senior or graduate and have never attended college before, you will apply as a freshman. The steps are as follows:

  1. Complete the undergraduate application for admission online .
  2. Submit official ACT report (not required if 21 years of age or older). Official ACT report can be requested by writing to American College Testing Program, Box 414, Iowa City, Iowa 52240 or visit www.act.org. Please ask them to sent it directly to MTSU, Code #3994. ACT scores on official high school transcripts are acceptable, as are SAT scores, Code #1466 ( www.collegeboard.com).
  3. Request that your high school forward your official transcript directly to the MTSU Admissions Office. High school seniors desiring tentative acceptance should request that an official transcript through the end of their junior year be forwarded to Admissions. A final transcript stating date of graduation must be forwarded immediately after graduation in order to complete the file.
  4. If eligible by GED, have official copy sent directly from reporting institution. NOTE: If GED recipient is less than 21 years of age, ACT scores must be presented.
  5. ACT reading and mathematics and English sub-scores, will be used to identify students for placement. Additional information will be mailed to applicants upon receipt of official ACT scores.
  6. Send official transcripts to: Admissions Office, 208 Cope Administration Building, 1301 East Main Street, Murfreesboro, TN 37132.

NOTE: All materials submitted become the property of MTSU and cannot be returned to the student or forwarded to any other party.

Freshman Admissions: What's Next?

The Admissions Decision:
You will receive written notification regarding your admission status from the Admissions Office after completing your file. If admission is granted, we will mail you academic advising information prior to the term's open registration period.

Orientation:
Freshman applicants enrolling for the first time in the Fall semester must attend a summer orientation session and will receive mail about this program in the spring. These orientation sessions, known as CUSTOMS, provide academic advising and early registration, as well as opportunities to learn more about campus and to meet fellow students. Registering for Classes:
As we mentioned above, you will receive information from the Admissions Office which tells you how to sign up for CUSTOMS otherwise you can register for classes closer to the start of the semester, via the PipelineMT system.

Financial Aid:
For information about scholarships, grants, and loans, please contact the Financial Aid Office at (615) 898-2830.

Housing:
MTSU does not require freshmen to live on campus and does not automatically assign you a dorm room when you are admitted. If you wish to live on campus, please contact the University Housing Office at (615) 898-2971 to obtain an application.

Scholarship Deadlines:
The MTSU Freshman Academic Scholarship Deadline (including Buchanan Fellowship) is December 1st of the year proceeding enrollment. As a note most Competitive Scholarships have a deadline around February 15th of the year proceeding enrollment.

Transfer Admissions: How to Apply

An undergraduate applicant who has previously attended any college or university must apply as a transfer student.The first step is to supply the necessary admission credentials:

  1. Complete the undergraduate application for admission online.
  2. Request that an official transcript be forwarded directly to MTSU from your high school and each college, business, or technical school attended.
  3. If the applicant has earned fewer than 24 semester hours, ACT (or SAT) scores must also be submitted. (ACT or SAT scores not required if applicant is 21 or older.)
  4. Transfer students without previous English or Math course work will be required to take the appropriate portion of the placement test prior to registration. The placement test will assist in course placement and may result in requiring some students to enroll in ACT/COMPASS prescribed courses in addition to their degree programs. Students who took the placement test at another Tennessee Board of Regents institution should have test scores sent to the Admissions Office. NOTE: Persons graduating from high school prior to 1989 with 24 or more hours or holding a bachelor's degree are exempt from providing a high school transcript.
  5. If you wish a tentative acceptance, apply during your final term at your current college or university and request that an official transcript showing all work to-date be sent to the MTSU Admissions Office. Upon completion of final semester, request that a final transcript be sent to the MTSU Admissions Office to complete your file.
  6. Send official transcripts to: Admissions Office, 208 Cope Administration Building, MTSU, Murfreesboro, TN 37132.

NOTES: All materials submitted become the property of MTSU and cannot be returned to the student or forwarded to any other party. Concealment of previous college or university attendance may be cause for rejection, cancellation of admission, or dismissal of the student.

Transfer Admissions: What's Next?

After your application file is approved, the Admissions Office will conduct an initial evaluation of your transfer credits and notify you how to view your transcript evaluation. Courses from previous institutions may not equate to degree cirriculum but may however count as elective courses. Your faculty advisor will assist you in fitting these courses into your degree plan. Re-enrolling Admissions: How to Apply

  1. Complete the online re-enrollment application.
  2. If you have attended any other secondary institutions since last enrolled at MTSU, request that each of those institutions send an official transcript directly to the MTSU Admissions Office.
No application fee is required.

We encourage you to apply as early as possible. Re-enrolling students are eligible to participate in the priority registration periods during April for Summer and Fall class selection and in November for Spring classes. The earlier you apply, the earlier you can register, and the more class sections you will have to choose from. Registration materials may be found at Pipeline MT.

When to Apply

  • July 1 - The deadline to apply for undergraduate admission for the fall semester.

  • February 15 - First Priority Deadline for fall semester. Applications received after February 15 will be considedered until July 1(Second Priority Deadline) or when undergraduate enrollment capacity is reached.

  • December 15- Deadline to apply for undergraduate admission for the spring semester.

We encourage high school seniors to apply early. Seniors should ask their guidance counselor to send official high school transcripts through the end of their junior year, as they may be eligible for tentative admission. It is also important to have these transcripts and admission applications on file prior to December 1 so that eligible students will be considered for MTSU academic scholarships. These academic scholarships generally have a December 1 deadline.
