MTSU Scholarships

MTSU continues to expand the scholarship and award programs and will post any changes as they are finalized.

MTSU has a safe and friendly environment with diverse student body -- 54 percent female, 13 percent minority, and students from over 70 countries.

Merit Scholarships and Awards

Middle Tennessee State University's commitment to providing students with merit scholarships and awards continues to grow. Our main scholarships and awards for new students are listed below.

Students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents and are interested in the following scholarships and awards, should submit an admission application, official ACT or SAT test scores, and an official transcript to the Admissions Office. Transfer applicants must submit official high school and college transcripts.

Students who have submitted all of the above information by December 1 will be considered first for scholarships and awards. Students who have submitted all of the above information by February 15 will be considered in the second round of scholarship and award offers, pending available funds. After February 15, additional scholarships and awards may be given pending available funds.

Please note that December ACT test scores will be accepted for scholarship and award purposes.

Freshman Merit Scholarships

  • No scholarship application needed.
  • Unless noted, scholarships are granted for a maximum of 8 semesters.
  • Scholarships are not awarded during the summer term.
  • Only students who receive scholarships will be notified. Notification letters will be sent by March 1.
  • The awarding of scholarships is based on the availability of funds and the criteria set forth by the appropriate governing bodies and is subject to change.
  • In the event that MTSU offers multiple scholarships to a student, only one University Academic Scholarship can be accepted.
  • All University scholarships are in addition to a Tennessee Lottery Scholarship, but cannot exceed the financial cost of attendance. For more information, please contact the Financial Aid Office, (615) 898-2830.

As a scholarship recipient, you will be provided a five-hour per week service experience in a department on campus.

Buchanan Fellowship

The Buchanan Fellowship represents the highest award given to an entering
student in the University Honors College. Twenty applicants are chosen as
Buchanan Fellows and they receive: 1) full payment of tuition and
fees even if tuition rises in the future; coverage of out-of-state fees where
applicable; (2) a $1000 per year book allowance; (3) consideration for study
abroad scholarships; (4) access to the resources of the Undergraduate
Fellowships Office; (5) access to Honors College special lectures and events;
and (6) support for admissions preparation to graduate and professional schools. For more information, please contact the University Honors College at 615-898-2152.

The National Merit Finalist

First-time freshmen who notify MTSU of their National Merit Finalist status and indicate MTSU as their first choice institution will automatically be awarded $6,000 per academic year.

The Chancellor Scholarship

The Chancellor Scholarship is awarded to first-time freshmen applicants who have an ACT composite score of 32 or higher (a 1410 or higher SAT score) and at least a 3.75 cumulative grade point average (GPA). The award is $5,000 per academic year. MTSU reserves the right to limit the scholarship to twenty (20) recipients if necessary funding is not available. The Presidential Scholarship

The Presidential Scholarship is awarded to first-time freshmen applicants who have an ACT composite score of 29 or higher (a 1280 or higher SAT score) and at least a 3.75 cumulative grade point average (GPA). The award is $4,000 per academic year. MTSU reserves the right to limit the scholarship to one hundred (100) recipients if necessary funding is not available. The Academic Service Scholarship

To be considered for this scholarship, a student must have an ACT composite score of 27 or higher (a 1210 or higher SAT score) and a high school GPA of at least 3.75. The award is $3,000 per academic year. MTSU reserves the right to limit the scholarship to 130 recipients if necessary funding is not available For more information, contact the Financial Aid Office, (615) 898-2830.

Valedictorians and Salutatorians
Academic Service Scholarships in the amount of $3,000 per year will be awarded to Tennessee high school valedictorians and salutatorians who have an ACT composite of 23 or higher (a 1060 or higher SAT score).Please ensure that the Admissions Office is notified prior to February 15 of rank in class.

The Provost Scholarship

To be eligible for consideration, applicants must be first-time MTSU attendees and present an ACT composite score of at least 26 (an 1170 or higher SAT score) and have at least a 3.75 high school GPA. This scholarship currently offers an award of $1,500 per academic year. MTSU reserves the right to limit the scholarship to sixty (60) recipients if necessary funding is not available. Transfer Merit Scholarships

  • Scholarship deadline of February 1.
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
  • No scholarship application needed except for Phi Theta Kappa scholarship.
  • Unless noted, scholarships are granted for a maximum of 4 semesters.
  • Scholarships are not awarded during the summer term.
  • Only students who receive scholarships will be notified. Notification letters will be sent beginning April 1.

Phi Theta Kappa Scholarships

Five (5) Phi Theta Kappa Scholarships in the amount of $4,000 per academic year are available for transfer students. For more information and for the scholarship application, contact the Admissions Office, (615) 898-2111.

TBR Community College Academic Service Scholarship

Transfer students from TBR community colleges will be considered for the Academic Service Scholarship if they are currently receiving an Academic Service scholarship or its equivalent from their transferring institution, have at least a 3.0 cumulative college GPA, and will have completed either an Associates Degree or will earn 60 semester hours within a minimum of four (4) semesters. The scholarship will be $3,000 per academic year and will be awarded for a total of 4 semesters.

Non-TBR Academic Service Scholarship

Transfer students from non-TBR community colleges with a minimum 3.0 cumulative college GPA will be considered for the Academic Service Scholarship. The scholarship will be $3,000 per academic year and will be awarded for a total of 4 semesters.

Other Scholarships

  • Scholarship application required and deadlines may vary from December 1.
  • Notification letters will be sent beginning March 1.

MTSU Foundation Scholarships

Scholarships are available through the MTSU Foundation for qualified applicants. These include Departmental Scholarships and other scholarship possibilities. Many of the scholarships are awarded based on the availability of funds and may not be available every year. If the scholarship description does not state an award amount or selection criteria, contact the responsible department for specific information. This listing will be maintained weekly. The scholarship deadline for the fall semester is generally December 1. Some departmental scholarships may have different deadlines. Please contact the department for more information. When you review the scholarship listing, note the fund number, name and department of those scholarships in which you are interested. This information will be required on the application.

DREAM (Diverse Representation and Educational Access at MTSU)Scholarship

The DREAM Scholarship celebrates and encourages diversity at MTSU. Recipients will be selected for the scholarship based on Tennessee residency, academic requirements, financial need, and contribution to the diversity of the university. Recipient must be a graduate of a Tennessee high school, have a 21 ACT (980 SAT) or 3.0 GPA, and meet financial need and diversity requirements. Recipients of the DREAM Scholarship will receive funding equal to full tuition plus $500 per semester, through a combination of federal, state, and University funds; MTSU scholarship funds will be used to supplement the Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarship and certain other types of aid to equal the above amount. In addition to admissions requirements indicated above, applicants must submit a FAFSA and a DREAM Scholarship Application by March 15 to be considered. Army Officer Scholarships

The Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) merit scholarships (4, 3 1/2, 3, 2 1/2, and 2 year scholarships) are available to qualified full-time students enrolled in any academic discipline through the MTSU Military Science Department. ROTC scholarships will pay 100% of MTSU's tuition and mandatory fees, $1200 a year for books and a stipend ($300/month for a freshman, $350/month for a sophomore, $400/month for a junior and $500/month for a senior). The deadline for application submission is January 10 for the 4 year scholarship.
