Transfer Admissions

On August 1, 1998, MTSU became the first university in the state to have an Honors College.

Admission Standards for Transfer Applicants:

An undergraduate applicant who previously has registered at any college or university since high school graduation must apply as a transfer student.

Admission will be granted to transfer applicants who have:

  • earned 24 or more semester hours and have earned a 2.00 or higher cumulative grade point average from all post-secondary institutions attended. To qualify for regular admission the applicant must request an official transcript from every institution attended be sent directly to the Admissions Office.
  • earned fewer than 24 semester hours (or fewer than 35 quarter hours) from a college or university. They must meet both transfer and freshman admission standards.
  • not been enrolled in any post-secondary institution in the 12 months preceding the term for which they are applying. They will be eligible for admission but will be admitted on academic probation if their cumulative grade point average is less than 2.00.

Concealment of previous college or university attendance may be cause for rejection, cancellation of admission, or dismissal of the student.

Applicants who do not meet the standards above, who wish to be considered for admission to MTSU on a probationary basis can fill out a personal statement form for consideration by the Admissions Review Board.

        Applicants in this category have:

  • 24 or more semester hours (or greater than 35 quarter hours) and have earned less than a 2.00 cumulative grade point average, from all post-secondary institutions attended, and have attended a post-secondary institution within the last 12 months.
  • less than 24 semester hours (or fewer than 35 quarter hours) who do not meet both the transfer and freshman admission standards, listed above.

The Admissions Office reserves the right to request a Personal Statement Form from any and all students being considered for admittance to the University. The decision of the Admissions Review Board in such cases is final. Transfer students are admitted on probation and will be required to enroll in UNIV 2020 their first semester of enrollment. Refer to Academic Policies and Procedures for the University retention policy.

Previously Applied:

Students who have previously applied to the university and have paid the application fee, do not have to pay the application fee again. These students will need to download and fill out a paper application to be returned by mail. Please make a note at the top of the application that you have previously paid the application fee.

Additional Requirements:

Transfer applicants graduating from high school in 1989 or after, who have not yet earned a bachelors degree, are subject to the high school unit requirements.

Eligible transfer applicants who have not completed all of the required high school courses will be admitted, but they must remove deficiencies during the first 30 credit hours of enrollment at MTSU. Courses required to remove deficiencies can be used to satisfy general education requirements where appropriate.

Transfer applicants whose transferred coursework includes credits in a college-level English composition, a reading intensive course, and an algebra based mathematics course will be exempt from placement testing. The algebra based mathematics course can be used to satisfy the high school unit deficiency. The college level English composition course can be used to satisfy the English high school deficiency.

Transfer applicants without previous credit in a college level English composition, a reading intensive course, or an algebra based mathematics course will be required to take the appropriate portion of the academic assessment placement test prior to registration. The test will assist in course placement and may result in some students having to enroll in prescribed courses as additions to their major program courses.

If you are required to take the placement tests for any of the reasons listed above, the Admissions Office (after reviewing and approving your application) will send you a card which will explain how to register for the test with the office of Testing Services. The applicant is responsible for signing up for a placement test session prior to registration. For more information about the content of the test, please contact the MTSU University Studies Office at (615) 898-2568.

Transfer Applicants Pursuing a Second Bachelor's Degree

The Admissions Office does not offer a course-by-course evaluation of credit if you have already earned a degree from another institution. However, your academic advisor will be able to assist you in determining the courses needed for your second bachelor's degree. You will need to obtain permission of the specific department for courses requiring prerequisites. The MTSU Undergraduate Catalog contains further information about requirements for students who enroll to obtain a second bachelor's degree.

Transfer Applicants with Associate Degrees

Transfer Applicants have to meet the MTSU General Education Requirements stated in the MTSU Undergraduate Catalog, under the specific major chosen by Applicant.

TBR General Education Requirements:

All Community Colleges and Universities in the Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) system, as of 2004, will share a common lower-division freshman and sophomore general education core curriculum of forty-one (41) semester hours for Baccalaureate degrees, Associate of Arts degrees, and Associate of Science degrees.

Tennessee Transfer Pathway:

The TBR in cooporation with the University of Tennessee system, in the Fall of 2011, created 50 universal Transfer Pathways ensuring a student's ability to make timely and cost-effective transitions from community colleges in Tennessee to the university system. All earned credit hours will apply toward a bachelor's degree in the same discipline. If you need more information visit the Universal Transfer Pathway site.
