July 2009

Dear Fellow MTSU Army ROTC Alumnus:.

It is with great pleasure that we inform all Alumni of the events programmed for SY 2009-10 as well as results of the December 2008 Alumni meeting.

The MTSU vs. Louisiana-Lafayette Salute to Armed Services Football Game is scheduled 14 November 2009, kickoff at 1400.  This year, 2009, the Armed Forces Committee will continue to build on the success of the previous year.  Prior to the pre-game picnic the ROTC Alumni will meet in Forrest Hall for a short meeting.  All veterans and family members will be given free tickets (entrance) to the game and a free picnic.  At half-time, all services will be recognized as the Band of Blue plays each Service song.  Please make plans to attend this special game.

The AROTC Alumni will meet in the Forrest Hall library for a short alumni meeting at the start of the picnic around 1030-1130.  We will discuss Wall of Fame nominees, museum, and scholarships.  Our next Annual Alumni meeting is set for 26 (Saturday) December 2009 at 1700 in Forrest Hall.  We plan to have a short meeting followed by a social at Doug & Sherry Chaffin's house again.  At the meeting we will vote on the MTSU Army ROTC Hall of Fame & the Austin Award.  To nominate someone go to http://www.mtsu.edu/arotc1/halloffame_MilitarySci.shtml.  We will also update the alumni on other items of interest.

The Alumni dues ($20/year) primarily go to the MTSU Army ROTC Scholarship Fund.  Currently each year the interest in the MTSU AROTC Alumni Scholarship funds three $1,000 scholarships to deserving cadets after he/she contracts.  We ask each alumnus to consider becoming a "Lifetime Member" with a tax deductible fund.  The Lifetime Membership is scaled according to age.  If each alumnus paid their dues or became a lifetime member, then we could fund every contracted MS III each year with a $1,000 scholarship.  Lifetime membership scale:  age 40 & under $350; 41-50 $300; 51-60 $250; 61-70 $150; 71-80 $125; and 80 & above $100.  We appreciate the support of all our dues paying members as well as those who have already become lifetime members.

You made history!  Military items are slowly coming in to the Forrest Hall library for display.  One display case has foreign military school badges (we need foreign jump wings, marksmanship badges, and foreign school badges as examples).  Please send your foreign military badges to Nancy Garner or Chuck Giles to the address on the bottom mailer.

I am receiving pictures of our alumni deployed throughout the world.  Please check these photos on our alumni web page.  If you have pictures please e-mail them to ngarner@mtsu.edu with a short paragraph on your duties.

BECOME A LIFE-TIME MEMBER OF THE MTSU AROTC ALUMNI CHAPTER

MINUTES FROM MSAC 27 December 2008 MEETING

MAJ Chuck Giles, President of MSAC, presided over the meeting.  There were 12 members in attendance.  The meeting began at 5:00 p.m.

Items discussed during the meeting:

1.  ROTC Alumni Scholarship.  The ROTC scholarship fund will now award three $1,000 scholarships each Spring Semester.

2.  General's Award.  In November 2008, the "Officers Dress Sword" was presented to Cadet Aschley Deeds.  The fund currently has $2,649.  The next sword will be awarded in the Fall of 2009.

3.  There were no nominations submitted for Hall of Fame or Austin Award.

4.  Alumni Coin.  A motion was passed to delete the campaigns on the Alumni Coin and add "Military Science Alumni".  This will signify that the coin is for MTSU Army ROTC alumni.  It will hopefully influence the incoming alumnus to support the Military Science Alumni Chapter in support, mentorship, and scholarships.

5.  Date for 2009 Meeting.  A motion was passed to hold the 2009 business MSAC meeting before the Salute to Armed Forces picnic (14 November 2009/Time TBD) and vote on the issues at the annual MSAC meeting on Saturday 26 December 2009 at 5:00 p.m. in Forrest Hall.  This will leave more time for the social.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:52 p.m.
