Saturdays at Todd
Saturdays at Todd is a department-led initiative organized and hosted by staff and students that engage the faculty, off-campus artists, and community around Murfreesboro with interactive workshops of various media. Beginning in Fall 2021 many of the workshops will include a focus on Art teachers and High School students (9th-12th) to further promote their experiences in Fine Arts. The events are free and open to the public with all materials provided as tools to build greater advocacy for the arts in middle Tennessee! Students and faculty, and community artists participate and lead demonstrations. They answer questions and offer insight into context, technique, and concept. We host exhibit openings in our main gallery that are also scheduled on Saturdays to encourage community and alumni attendance while providing greater access to our facilities and programs! All activities include all ages in interactive workshops, lectures, and exhibits. Through open discussion about artwork and the role of the artist in communities, we can demonstrate the importance of arts education while fostering a culture of support for the Arts in Tennessee. TBA information will be updated as events are finalized throughout the semester.

Suminagashi and Orizomegami | Dr. Laura Cochrane
11 a.m. – 1 p.m., April 20, 2024, MTSU Todd Hall, Room 236
Join Associate Professor of Art History Dr. Laura Cochrane as she leads another great paper marbling lesson in the art of Suminagasui and Orizomegami. The former a style of marbling from Japan that is often considered one of the earliest marbling techniques invented. It involves floating ink on water in a tray and manipulating the ink to form patterns before transferring the image to a sheet of paper. The latter means folding and dyeing paper. It is a paper dyeing method that is used to create patterns on liquid absorbent paper.

Introduction to Composition
This workshop is designed for beginning and intermediate-level photographers; even the experienced photographer may learn a tip or two. We will look at the fundamentals of the creative elements of photography. You will be introduced to principles and techniques that will create visual interest. The discussion of composition will include the Principle of Thirds, Power of Leading Lines, Symmetry, and Balance. In addition, we will discuss the principles of negative space, depth of field, and cropping for visual flow. By understanding the guidelines of composition, you will have a clearer understanding of what draws the viewer's eye to the subject.
