How to open a MS Office file from Internet Explorer
in the Businesslab or master classroom?

This page explains to students how to use Internet Explorer (IE) to open MS Office files when using computers in the Businesslab or in a master classroom.

  1. Run Internet Explorer.
  2. Go to the web page containing the file to open, i.e. http://www.mtsu.edu/~deprince
  3. When you click on the file you would like to open you may:
    • be presented with a " File Download" dialog box or,
    • get an error message stating that the file cannot be found.
  4. If you get the " File Download" dialog box:

    • Click on "Save" and save the file to the " C:\My Documents" directory in the local hard drive.

  5. If you get an error message similar to the ones below, you will need to download files to the local hard disk.

    To download the files follow these steps:

    • Netscape users: right click on the file you wish to download and select " Save Link As..".
    • Internet Explorer users: right click on the file you wish to download and select " Save Target As..".
    • Select the destination directory (" C:\My Documents") and click "OK.
  6. To open the file, go to the " C:\My Documents" directory and double click on the file you just downloaded.
