Printing Problems
Note: Before restarting a lab computer, have the student save their work on removable
disk or S: drive and use another computer.
Selecting Printer
If you are experiencing problems printing, make sure you select the correct destination
printer from the File | Print menu. Under name you should see several printers listed.
Select the printer you desire.

Printing laser printer test page
The laser printer's test page allows to verify how many pages have been printed and
to determine toner performance. Follow these steps: put printer off-line by pressing
the " Go" button, then press the " Menu" button several times until you see " Information Menu", then press the " Item" button until you see " Print Configuration", then press the " Select" button. The test page will print. Please file the second page (the page with the
address and page counter information) in the Laser Printer Folder on the lab assistant desk.
Print job not printing
This can be caused by several things:
-
Check that the client computer is connected to the network. Go to " My Computer" and verify you can access the network drives (S:) from My Computer. If not, select
Shutdown | Restart. Make sure you see the login script executing and you have access
to the network drives.
-
Verify Printer is installed. Go to " Start" | " Settings", " Pinters and Faxes" and make sure all printers are listed. If not, contact a graduate assistant or lab
director to re-install the printers. Put an " Out-of-Order" sign in the computer and fill the Equipment Problem form and place it on GA desk.
-
Check the printer is properly configured in the client computer. Go to " Start" | " Programs", " Microsoft Office", " Microsoft Word", then select " File", " Print", under Printer Name, click on the drop down box and make sure all printers are listed:
-
Make sure the client computer has enough free disk space, at least 100MB. If not, restart computer for all settings to be restored.
-
Make sure printer is online and connected. Go to the printer, verify the printer is online and is connected to the network
(check power and network cables). Try printing from other computer, if it works Ok,
then the problem is in the client computer - place out of order sign in computer.
-
Is the printer Offline?. If everything checks ok, the problem may be that the printer was put "offline" on
the lab assistant desk. Go to Control Panel, "Printers", right click on the printer,
make sure the the "Use printer Offline" is not checked (only in labs E, F).
Printing from frank
To print to the default printer (laser) at your desk, try the following command: lpansi filename To print to the default line pinter, use lp filename To see a list of all printers, use lpstat -t To print to a particular line printer, use lp -dhplp01 filename where: hplp01 is the name of the line printer To see status of your jobs use lpstat
Internet and Remote Connections
Connecting to frank from home
Students can connect to frank from home using a terminal emulator program. This will
allow then to check e-mail. They do not need to have Internet provider, just a computer
with a modem and a terminal emulator program. The terminal emulator should be set
to VT-100 and modem must call one of the following numbers: 5908, 5176 or 5350. For
troubleshooting, students should contact OIT at 2512.
Students can also check their e-mail from anywhere by going to http://www.mtsu.edu/email

Editing Web Pages
Students can use anyone of the following programs to edit web pages:
Applications
Lab PC S: Drive Access
All computers in the master classrooms and in the computer lab has direct access to
the S: drive as a local drive. The S: drive can also be accessed via the web browser
- here.
Cannot save to A: drive
This problem can be caused by:
-
The diskette being used is not formatted or is a Mac diskette. Format diskette (delete
everything on the disk) or use another disk.
-
The user switched disks without closing open files from an application. You cannot
change disks unless you first close all open files from the current disk and then
insert the other disk.
-
The disk drive may be out of order. In this case, we advise the user to save the file
to the "StudentsTemp" directory on the S:\ drive. Then, he or she can open the file
from other computer and save the work to the disk.
Convert files to MS Word format
Use the Conversion Plus software located on lab assistant desks and GA desk.
PowerPoint print 6-slides/ page
Make sure you print six slides per page when printing PowerPoint class notes from
the s: drive. To to this use the File | Print, then select "Handouts" under the "Print
what" section, select 6 slides per page. Make sure to select the correct destination
printer before printing.

How to use the scanner
The scanner is located at the LA001 computer in the north lab assistant desk. Only
lab assistants and graduate assistants are authorized to be in this area. We limit
the scanning to a "reasonable" number of pages or pictures. We do not scan complete
books as that would take too long for lab assistants to do. Faculty members normally
use graduate assistants to scan several pieces of material.
To scan documents to Word, use the TextBridge Pro icon on the desktop. To scan follow this steps:
-
Place material - one or more pages- on the flat surface of the scanner. Align it properly.
Close scanner.
-
Run the TextBridge Pro software.
-
The TextBridge Pro main screen will display. There is a series of buttons at the top
of the screen:
-
The [AUTO] button to do a one click scan,
-
Step 1, selects the source. It should show a picture of a Scanner.
-
Step 2, scans the text in the page(s)
-
Step 3, selects the output. It should show a logo for MS Word ( W ).
-
Click on [AUTO]
-
The scanner will scan the document, you need to select the text area and then select,
File, Return to TextBridge Pro.
-
The program will return to TextBridge Pro and show the page just scanned within a
small window.
-
You have three options:
-
After you scan all your pages, click on [Done]. The program will scan the text, and then it will open MS Word with the text on it.
-
In Ms Word, select File, Save As to save this document.
To scan pictures, click on the HP Director icon on desktop
-
Make sure HP Scanjet 4500c/5500c is selected on the device box.
-
Click on Scan Picture button
-
Wait until the HP Scan Manager appears - make any changes you may want
-
Make sure the dotted line cover all the area of the document you are scanning.
-
Click on Accept.
