College of Basic and Applied Sciences Virtual Mentoring

Students,

The College of Basic and Applied Sciences has alumni and industry friends who have agreed to become virtual mentors for you!  These virtual mentors are available to the College of Basic & Applied Sciences majors to give career advice and answer questions via email (or skype when needed).  Our hope is that you will use this resource to find professionals that are already in the field you want to go into and ask them questions about what their job is like, how you can prepare now to get a job like theirs when you graduate, and get feedback as you pursue a career path.  This is not intended to give you people to ask for a job or to write your resume for you – they are simply available for career advice and insight into their professional field.  I encourage you to utilize these mentors and anticipate you will find this to be a valuable resource to help you in your career journey and your time at MTSU.

My name is John Anderson and I graduated in 2005 majoring in Aerospace with a Professional Pilot concentration.  After completing college, I worked as a flight and ground instructor for MTSU for just over a year before being hired by Corporate Flight Management.  After performing everything from  VIP, medevac, and Department of Defense contract transport flights for six years, I now fly for a group of private companies in our own corporate flight department.

I currently work for the FAA as an Aviation Safety Inspector. Prior 25 years at American Airlines in aircraft maintenance.  Prior to AA, 4 years at Boeing and 2 years 10 months in the U.S. Air Force. I graduated in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace from MTSU and in 1994 with a Master’s in Aerospace Education from MTSU.

Mark has a Master of Business Administration and Bachler of Science degree in Aerospace from MTSU.   He has over 25 years of business experience in the Climate Control business space, financial services and air transportation. He currently directs the HVAC Division of a Nashville based refrigeration distributor.

Captain Frances Messalle is a 1994 graduate of the US Coast Guard Academy with a BS in Marine Science. She has served at various operational units across the Coast Guard include one tour afloat and 4 air stations. She has flown 4 different fixed wing aircraft in support of the Coast Guard’s 11 statutory missions. She has been an Aircraft Commander and/or Instructor Pilot in each airframe. She recently completed as Commanding Officer at the most high visibility Air Station in the Coast Guard .

I graduated from MTSU with a Bachelor’s in Aerospace Administration in 1992 and then with a Master’s in Aerospace Education in 1993. I started working at Southwest Airlines the next day. I’ve worked in two different cities as a Customer Service and Operations agent before getting into Dispatch six years later. In Dispatch I am a Desk trainer that trains new Dispatcher when they are new to the Dispatch Office.

My name is Michelle Conkle and I am a territory manager for MWI Animal Health in south central Tennessee.  I have worked as a sales rep for the past 17 years and recently completed my Master’s Degree in Counseling.  I graduated from MTSU in 1994 with a double major in Horse Science and Psychology.  I competed for 3 years on the MTSU Equestrian Team.  I was raised on a small farm in Paris, TN, was active in the Henry County 4-H youth program for 10 years, participating in the horse & chicken projects.  My husband, daughter and I enjoy our mini farm in College Grove, TN.

My name is Steven Locke and I am a grain elevator manager for Bunge in St. Joseph, La.  My primary job includes managing a staff of less than 10 and buying commodities (corn, rice, soybeans, wheat, and grain sorghum) and selling them on the open market.  I graduated MTSU in Dec '10 and worked for Tyson Foods, Inc. before becoming a trainee with Bunge.

I graduated from MTSU in 1990 and immediately started working for Tennessee Farmers Co-op on their training program. I'm currently in Purchasing in the Feed Department where I buy grain and many other items used to make animal feed. I live in Murfreesboro and enjoy cheering on the Lady Raiders Basketball Team.

Mike graduated from MTSU in 1982 with a B.S. in Agribusiness. He worked as a loan officer/manager with the Farm Credit system before joining a local bank in Winchester. In 2005, Mike was part of the organizing group that formed First Vision Bank, a new community bank with offices in Tullahoma and Winchester. Mike currently serves as CEO/President for First Vision Bank and has added offices in Manchester and Murfreesboro.

Justin  is currently works for the University of Tennessee and Tennessee State University Extension, where he serves as a Horticulture Extension Agent in Wilson County.  He attended MTSU for both his undergraduate and graduate Degrees, graduating with a BS in Plant and Soil Science in 2009 and a Master of Education in 2014. While in school he was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity and also participated on MTSU’s nationally recognized dairy products judging team in 2006.
