Nursing FAQs

I'm interested in the nursing program.  Can I meet with an advisor?

You'll start by attending one of our nursing information sessions. See our RSVP form for the upcoming session dates and to let us know to expect you.  All students who are new to the nursing program must attend an information session before you can request a meeting with an advisor; this includes prospective students, current MTSU students in other majors, and previous pre-nursing majors who have been out of school for one or more semesters.  If you have questions and wish to speak with someone after attending an info session, reading this webpage, and reviewing the Nursing Admission Requirements webpage carefully, you may schedule an appointment with an academic advisor; you will receive instructions on how to set up the appointment after your info session requirement is completed.

If you'll be a new freshman or transfer student, please note that selection of and registration for classes will occur during your Customs new student orientation session.  There is no need to schedule an individual advising appointment for that purpose.

How do I apply to the School of Nursing?

  • New students:
    • Apply for admission to MTSU, preferably at least one month before the nursing application deadline noted below.  Visit the How To Apply webpage and click on your student type for more information and to apply:
      • If you have never applied to or attended MTSU, click on “First-Time Freshmen” or “Transfer Students” as applicable.
      • If you’ve attended MTSU in the past, click on “Re-Enrolling Students”.
      • If you’ve applied to MTSU in the past but never attended, please resubmit your application via the appropriate section of the How To Apply webpage in order to update your information. You will not need to pay the application fee. Once your application has been submitted send an email to the Admissions Office which includes your name, birthdate and MTSU ID number (if known) to let the Admissions staff know you have just reapplied.
    • Choose a major on your MTSU admission application:
      • You will not list nursing as your major on your admission application.  Instead, you’ll choose a non-nursing major to pursue while working on qualifying and applying for the nursing program.
      • If you are an incoming freshman and are accepted into the Freshman Candidacy or Health Science Scholars program, your major will be changed to Nursing during your first semester at MTSU; for more info, please visit the Nursing Admission Requirements webpage.
  • Freshman Candidacy & Health Science Scholars: You will have the opportunity to apply for freshman candidacy when you attend a Freshman Customs session during the weeks before your first semester at MTSU.  If you believe you may meet the requirements (based on having high ACT or SAT score, high GPA, and excellent grades in high school science classes), we recommend that you attend an early Customs session, as freshman candidacy spots may fill up quickly!
  • Academic Candidacy: If you are not admitted as a first-time freshman, you will submit your application packet (including all required materials) for Academic Candidacy to the School of Nursing during the semester in which you will complete your final general education and pre-requisite requirements.
    • Deadlines: October 1 for spring, February 1 for fall
    • Please visit the Nursing Admission Requirements webpage for information about the admission requirements, application process, and other important info.
    • A link to the application is available on the School of Nursing homepage.

How do I declare a major in nursing?

If accepted into the competitive nursing program, the School of Nursing will change your major to Nursing.

Can I minor in nursing?

A minor in nursing is not available at MTSU.

I have a bachelor degree in another area.  What pre-requisites are required?

As a student with a prior bachelor degree, you won’t need to take any of the general education classes, other than the following required pre-requisites:

  • MATH 1710* College Algebra
  • PSY 1410 General Psychology
  • BIOL 2010/2011 Anatomy & Physiology I
  • BIOL 2020/2021 Anatomy & Physiology II
  • BIOL 2100/2101** Microbiology in Disease

*If you took a different math course, it may count as meeting the math requirement.  Once you apply for admission to MTSU and submit your transcripts to the Admissions Office, we can then determine whether you have a valid math credit.
**You must complete BIOL 2100/1 or an equivalent healthcare-specific Microbiology course. Standard microbiology (BIOL 2230) will not be accepted beginning with October 1, 2017, applications.

How can I determine whether my classes at another school will transfer to MTSU?

Visit the New Students section of our Advising FAQs webpage for helpful info on checking transfer equivalencies.

Can I choose a concentration or nursing specialty?

Many pre-nursing students have a goal of working in a particular area of nursing, such as pediatrics or oncology. In the field of nursing, specialization occurs at the graduate level. Students first complete a 4-year bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN), which is general rather than focused on one certain area of nursing. Nurses who decide to continue on to a master's degree (MSN) may then choose to pursue a nursing specialty through the MSN program. Visit our Nursing MSN webpage for information about MTSU's Master of Science in Nursing program and the available concentrations at MTSU.

Does MTSU have scholarships for nursing students?

Students who are admitted into the School of Nursing map apply for scholarships for nursing majors. For more information, visit the nursing scholarship website.

Nursing majors as well as future nursing candidates may be eligible to apply for general non-nursing scholarships through MTSU's MT One Stop.  Visit the MTSU scholarship website for more information.

Is my biology class still valid?

Grades for Anatomy & Physiology I and II (BIOL 2010/2011 and 2020/2021) and Microbiology in Disease (BIOL 2100/2101) must be within 7 years of the application deadline. If your biology grades are several years old, use the chart below to determine whether they are still valid or will need to be retaken. A biology course which must be retaken due to the 7-year time limit will not count as your one allowable repeat, regardless of the original grade.

Academic Maps

Visit our Advising FAQs webpage for info about academic maps, what they are, and where to find them. A nursing academic map can be accessed in either of the following ways:

Please Note: Most students who plan to apply for Academic Candidacy use 3 semesters to complete their general education and pre-requisite requirements, as listed on the academic map. However, you may need additional time if you need to take prescribed classes or need to repeat courses to earn passing grades.

This map is not a substitute for academic advisement; contact your academic advisor (as applicable for your major) if you have any questions about scheduling or about your degree requirements. Also see the Nursing program homepage for a complete list of requirements. Note: Requirements are continually under revision, and there is no guarantee they will not be changed or revoked; contact the department and/or program area for current information.
