Mary Florence Betts Scholarship in Education
This scholarship, contributed by Miss Betts, has been established in memory of Margaret Putman. It will be awarded to deserving students in the College of Education and Behavioral Science, with priority given to residents from either Stewart or Montgomery Counties, Tennessee. The selection process is under the direction of the dean of the college of Education and Behavioral Science.

Albert L. and Ethel Carver Smith Memorial Scholarship
These scholarships provide approximately $1,500 to four Human Sciences majors with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Applicants must have a classification of sophomore or junior in the spring semester (at least 30 semester hours earned or having two remaining semesters) and must be full-time students during the semesters for which the scholarship is funded. Financial need will be considered. Official transcript must be submitted with application. Recipients are required to attend the Awards Banquet.

Will Bowdoin Scholarship in Education
This scholarship was established by Mrs. Ruth Bowdoin in memory of her husband, Dr. Will Bowdoin, the University's first dean of the College of Education. The recipient will be chosen annually. Criteria for selection shall include, but not be limited to, the following: Applicants must be a freshman or above enrolled in a program leading to certification in education, must possess a definite financial need, and must have (or maintain) a grade point average of 2.50. Preference will be given to students who as children attended "The Ruth Bowdoin Classroom on Wheels" in Murfreesboro, should such students apply and meet the above criteria. The selection process will be under the direction of the dean of the College of Education and Behavioral Science. One-half of the scholarship will be awarded for each of the semesters.

Rita Davenport Human Sciences Scholarship
This scholarship provides approximately $200 to a Human Sciences major. The applicant must have a classification of sophomore or junior in the spring semester (at least 30 semester hours earned or having two remaining semesters), must have a minimum GPA of 2.8, and must be a full-time student during the semesters for which the scholarship is funded. The applicant must have established meaningful professional goals and have demonstrated leadership in the areas of Human Sciences, campus life, and community involvement. Financial need will be considered. Official transcript must be submitted with application.

Kappa Omicron Nu Scholarship Award
The recipient of this scholarship is made to a participating, contributing KONu member who is classified as a junior in the spring semester (60-89 hours earned or two remaining semesters) and who is planning to return to MTSU to study Human Sciences as a full-time student the following fall semester. An explanation of need for the scholarship is required as well as an official transcript which must be submitted with the application. This annual scholarship is approximately $200.

Delmar B. and Mary A. Pockat Memorial Education Endowment Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Mary A. Pockat in memory of her husband, Delmar B. Pockat, former dean of the College of Education and director of Professional Laboratory Experiences. The applicant must be an undergraduate student in professional education at MTSU and must have demonstrated a true love for children, pride and respect for the profession of teaching, and be planning a career in public schools. Further, preference will be given to the student(s) majoring in Science Education, GPA 3.25 (or above). Financial need is not a primary consideration.

Rutherford County Retired Teachers Association Scholarship
The applicant may be a graduate or undergraduate student, but must be preparing to teach (having completed at least the first year's requirements in Education courses). In addition, the recipient must be a resident of Rutherford County and maintain a grade point average of 3.00. Financial need will be considered in the selection process.

The Christa McAuliffe Scholarship
The Christa McAuliffe Scholarship was created to honor her memory by encouraging a college senior in teaching to pursue excellence in his or her preparation. The award is for $500 for the college senior year.

Applications from qualified second semester juniors must be submitted by April 1 each year the award is given. Forms will be available from the institution's education departments, financial aid office, or from the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation.

Those who are preparing to be elementary teachers who have earned an above average number of science and mathematics credits will receive bonus points in the competition. A minimum college cumulative GPA of 3.50 through the first term of the junior year and at least average scores on ACT or SAT and on the PPST must be documented.

Helen S. Potts Scholarship
The recipients will be full time students at the sophomore level or above, have a grade point average of 2.50, and be residents of Tennessee. Preference will be given to students from Williamson County. The Selection Committee will consider nonacademic activities, leadership, and the financial needs of all applicants. Recipients will be selected on an annual basis with the right to reapply. One scholarship will be awarded to a graduate student who is a teacher of history. Three scholarships will be awarded to undergraduate students in elementary and/or special education. One-half of the scholarship is awarded each semester.

The Ruth and Will Bowdoin Scholarship in Early Childhood Education
As a professional educator in her own career, Ruth Bowdoin recognized the importance of competent teaching for young children and effective education for their parents. Her commitment to these fundamentals was translated into a tangible form by the establishment of this special gift.

The scholarship is designed for an undergraduate student majoring in Early Childhood Education or Interdisciplinary Studies (K-6 emphasis) who plans to teach in programs for young children. The criteria for selection shall include demonstration of a strong commitment to education for the parent as well as the child and reflect personal and professional competencies, which are believed to lead to quality teaching. Applicants must have and maintain a GPA of 2.50 (and/or meet any change in admission for teacher education) and must submit adequate verification of a definite financial need.

Preference will be given to students of African-American origin and residents of Tennessee or Alabama who attended the Bowdoin classroom on wheels, should such students apply and meet the above criteria. The selection process shall be under the dean and department chair.

Dr. Betty Jo Hyde Welch Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Ms. Lisa Welch Silbar in memory of her mother, Dr. Betty Jo Hyde Welch. One-half of the scholarship amount will be awarded each of the fall and spring semesters. The applicant must be a junior or senior education major and demonstrate scholastic achievement of 3.50 or better, financial need, commitment, and service to the campus community.

James Madison Memorial Fellowship - Graduate
The James Madison Memorial fellowships carry a stipend of up to $24,000 for students enrolling in graduate programs leading to a master's degree in American history, political science, or education. After completing the degree, the recipient must teach American history, American government, or social studies at the secondary level for one or two years. At least one Tennessee resident will be given a fellowship in this round of awards.

Boutwell Scholarship
The Boutwell Scholarship is awarded annually to an undergraduate student majoring in Early Childhood Education or Interdisciplinary Studies (K-6 emphasis) with classification of junior and a minimum GPA of 3.0. the applicant must have established meaningful professional goals, demonstrate campus and/or community participation, and must be a full-time student during the semesters for which the scholarship is funded.

Tennessee Rehabilitation Corporation Scholarship
This award of approximately $650 per student is made to two Human Sciences majors who are planning to return to MTSU to study Human Sciences the following fall semester. Applicants must have a minimum 2.5 GPS, have a permanent residence in a rural area of Tennessee, and have established meaningful professional goals. A successful applicant must be a full-time student during the semesters for which the scholarship is funded, and on-half of the scholarship will be awarded for each of the semesters. Financial need will be considered.

Ernestine N. Reeder Honor Scholarship
This annual scholarship is for an undergraduate student seeking a degree in the Human Sciences Department. applicants must major in and have completed 18 hours in one of the programs offered by the Human Sciences Department. The applicant must have established meaningful professional goals, have a minimum 3.0 GPA, and be active in at least one of the student organizations in the human Sciences Department. The applicant must be a full-time student during the semesters for which the scholarship is funded. One-half of the scholarship will be awarded for each of the semesters.

Roddy Memorial Scholarship
The Roddy Memorial Fund has been established to provide $3,000 annual scholarships for up to six Rutherford County Human Sciences majors. Recipients must be graduates of a Rutherford County public or private school with preference being given to residents of Lascassas or Rockvale and will be selected by a Human Sciences Scholarship Committee and announced at the annual Awards Banquet. Successful applicants must be full-time students during the semesters for which the scholarship is funded. One-half of the scholarship will be awarded for each of the semesters. Applicants must be freshmen, sophomores, juniors, or seniors in the spring semester and have at least one remaining semester. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and must submit an official university manuscript that indicates the current GPA. Financial need will be considered. One-half of the scholarship will be awarded for each of the semesters.

Minority Teaching Fellows Program
The General Assembly established the Minority Teaching Fellows Program to encourage talented minority Tennesseans to enter the teaching field. The award is for $5,000 per year to pursue teacher licensure. those who receive the award incur an obligation to teach at some K-12 level in a Tennessee public school one year for each year the award is received.

To be eligible to apply, the applicant must be a minority Tennessee resident, a citizen of the United States, and an entering college freshman. To be considered, one must have achieved at least a 2.50 high school cumulative grade point average, and either have scored a minimum composite score of 18 on the ACT (or its SAT equivalent) or have been in the top 25 percent of the high school graduation class.

Each year that funds are available, applications will be provided in April to Tennessee high school guidance offices, or upon request from the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation. (TSAC)

Middle Tennessee State University Teaching Scholarship for Minorities
The MTSU Teaching Scholarship for Minorities was established to encourage talented minority students to enter the teacher education program at Middle Tennessee State University. These scholarships are for tuition and fees only.

Students should have an ACT of 19 or above and preference will be given to students who have completed their sophomore year at Middle Tennessee State University or have completed a two-year course of study at a community college.

Phi Delta Kappa Scholarship Grants for Prospective Educators
A minimum of 43 international scholarship grants for prospective educators will be awarded annually in March to high school seniors. forty-two $1,000 grants and one $2,000 grant will be awarded. Phi Delta Kappa's financial aid policy stipulates that at least two scholarship grants are awarded to dependents of Kappans and a minimum of four scholarship grants are awarded to minority students. The scholarship grants are awarded jointly by Phi Delta Kappa and the Phi Delta Kappa Educational Foundation.

Primary criteria used to select the 43 recipients will include scholarship, recommendations, written expression, interest in teaching or professional education as a career, and school and community activities. After-school employment and extracurricular activities will be considered under school and community activities. applicants should rank in the upper one-third of their classes.

Community College Education Recruitment Scholarship for Minorities
This scholarship was established to encourage talented minority Tennesseans to pursue a teacher education program at a participating Tennessee community college. Those selected will receive a $2,000 grant if enrolled full-time or $1,000 for part-time enrollment. the award may be renewed for a maximum aggregate of $4,000. No more than 10 of the 25 budgeted recipients may attend the same institution. Recipients are required to submit a written statement of an intent to teach in a Tennessee public school upon graduation.

To be eligible, an applicant must be a minority Tennessean, be a first-time college freshman, have a high school grade point average of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale, or have attained a minimum of 20 on the ACT (or the equivalent SAT) or have been in the top 25 percent of his/her high school class.

Each year that funds for new awards are available, applications will be provided in April to high school guidance offices and Tennessee community college. Completed applications should be submitted as soon as possible since applicants will be reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis until all funds are committed.

Tennessee Teaching Scholars Program
The purpose of this program is to encourage outstanding students to become public school teachers in an academic shortage area designated by the State Board of Education.

For each year of full-time teaching service in the Tennessee public schools in an academic shortage area, recipients may receive cancellation credit of 25 percent of the total borrowed plus interest accrued.

Residents of Tennessee admitted to or enrolled in an eligible Tennessee institution of higher education who pursue teacher licensure in an academic shortage area and pledge to teach in the shortage area for a minimum of four years are eligible to apply.

The following priority groups have been established for the program:

  1. Renewal applicants maintaining a 3.00 grade point average.
  2. Non-teachers holding a bachelor's degree or higher who have a 3.00 cumulative GPA for the highest degree completed and an ACT Composite Score of 21 or its SAT equivalent, or a GRE or Miller's Analogy Test Composite Score of equal percentile.
  3. Entering freshman and other undergraduate students who have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and an ACT Composite Score of 21 or its SAT equivalent (ACT Composite Scores of 19-20 or the SAT equivalent may be considered if there are compensating factors).
  4. Current teachers who do not hold endorsements in a designated shortage area and possess a 2.50 cumulative GPA.

Terry Weeks Scholarship in Education
This scholarship was established in 1988 by the Murfreesboro Rotary Club in recognition of MTSU alumnus Dr. Terry Weeks, who was chosen National Teacher of the Year. the recipient will be chosen annually with the right to reapply. The scholarship will be awarded to a student enrolled in a program leading to licensure in education.

The applicant must

  1. possess a definite financial need and submit adequate financial verification as requested by the review committee;
  2. have and maintain a grade point average of 2.50 and/or meet any change in admission for teacher education;
  3. reflect personal and professional competencies which are believed to lead to quality teaching.

Mary Tom Berry Scholarship
Mary Tom Berry, professor of education (retired), taught in the Department of Elementary and Special Education. Her career as a member of the University faculty spanned 34 years and included roles as teacher, department chair, and assistant vice president for academic affairs. The recipient of this scholarship shall be a graduate or undergraduate student in a major designed for primary education or the teaching of reading. Selected by a departmental faculty committee, the recipient will be chosen based on the following criteria: 1) a minimum grade point average of 2.50 (undergraduate) or a minimum grade point average of 3.00 (graduate); 2) documented evidence of financial need; 3) demonstrated competence in oral and written language skills; 4) a commitment to academic excellence; and 5 the expressed intention of becoming a member of the teaching profession.

Baxter E. Hobgood Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1997 by the Murfreesboro Kiwanis Club in memory of the former superintendent of Murfreesboro City Schools. A recipient will be chosen annually with the right to reapply. the scholarship will be awarded to a student enrolled in a program leading to licensure in education. The criteria for selection include, but are not limited to, the following:

  2. reflect personal and professional competencies, which are believed to lead to quality teaching;
  3. satisfy formal requirements for admission to the teacher education program.

Middle Tennessee Mathematics Teachers Scholarship
Candidates for this scholarship must be (1) an undergraduate secondary education major or minor who will be licensed to teach in mathematics; or (2) an elementary education major who will have an emphasis in mathematics. The recipient will receive the award during the student teaching semester.

The Matching Scholarship Program
These scholarships are for African-American U.S. citizens who qualify for admission or are currently enrolled. they are given on the basis of potential, areas of specialization, and economic status.

The Presidential Scholarship
This scholarship is given automatically to first-time freshmen with a composite score of 29 or higher on the ACT (or a total of 1280 or higher on the SAT) and at least a 3.75 cumulative average after the seventh semester of high school. It is renewable for four years by maintaining a 3.00 cumulative GPA at MTSU.

The Otis L. Floyd Academic Excellence Scholarship
The scholarship honors the former Tennessee Board of Regents chancellor and is given to African-American students demonstrating outstanding ability in high school. applicants must present a 25 or higher composite ACT score and at least a 3.20 GPA. Ten recipients will be chosen each year to recieve in-state tuition and miscellaneous fees, room and board, and a book allowance. It is renewable for eight semesters by maintaining a 3.00 GPA.

The Leadership/Performance Scholarship
This scholarship is given by the MTSU Foundation to entering freshmen based on academic achievement, extracurricular activities, and leadership. In-state tuition and a book allowance are renewable for eight semesters by maintaining a 2.80 GPA.

Nin Lee Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1997 in memory of Winnie H. (Nin) Lee who taught in the Franklin, Tenn., Special School District for 26 years. She was dedicated and enthusiastic teacher who was honored by her colleagues on many occasions. Recipients must be admitted to the teacher education program in Elementary Education or Educational Leadership or successor departments. Selection to be made by the College of Education and Behavioral Science Scholarship Committee.

Sylvia Snow Crowder Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 1999 by a bequest from the estate of Mrs. Jewell Snow Baker in memory of her daughter who taught at the Campus School prior to her death in 1977. The recipient of this scholarship shall be a full-time undergraduate student majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies. Selected by a departmental faculty committee, the recipient must have a minimum grade point average of 2.50 and a demonstrated financial need. A recipient will be chosen annually with the right to reapply.
