2013 Spring Semester Chinese Language Courses Offered by CIMTSU
1. Adult Beginning Chinese (A)
The course is for adults who have never studied Chinese or have a limited knowledge of the language. It teaches basic Chinese pronunciation, vocabulary and sentence structures that help to develop students' speaking, reading, and writing skills of Chinese at a basic level. Students are expected to learn the most frequently used words for basic conversation.
Time: Saturday 8:30-10:30AM Starting: Jan. 19, 2013
Sessions: 15 sessions, each session 2 hours
Tuition: $150 (Free for MTSU students; 50% off for MTSU faculty and staff)

2. Adult Beginning Chinese (B1)
The course is for adults who have studied Chinese for one semester or have some knowledge of the language. It teaches basic Chinese pronunciation, vocabulary and sentence structures that help to develop students' speaking, reading, and writing skills of Chinese at a basic level. 3. Adult Intermediate Chinese
The course is a continuation of the Beginning Chinese I, and for students who have had an introductory level of Chinese pronunciation, vocabulary and sentences. It focuses on developing skills in reading, writing and more sophisticated conversation. Chinese culture and history will be integrated in the course.

The teaching will focus on reading comprehension, listening practice, as well as the application of words structure and grammar. The lesson will be arranged and adjusted according to each student's level. Students are encouraged to participate in the oral practice in the class. The objective of the activities is providing students with the chances to communicate certain selected topics effectively in Chinese.

5. Elementary Chinese for Children (A)
The course is designed for children ages 5 through 12 who have studied Chinese for one semester or have some knowledge of the language. Basic words and sentences will be taught through fun activities such as songs and games. Students will become familiar with Chinese language and culture and develop an interest in learning a new language.

6. Elementary Chinese for Children (B)
The course is designed for children ages 5 through 12 who have studied Chinese for about one semester or have some knowledge of the language. Basic words and sentences will be taught through fun activities such as songs and games. Students will become familiar with Chinese language and culture and develop an interest in learning a new language.

The course is designed for children who can listen and speak Chinese fairly well and want to expand their skills in reading and writing Chinese. They have not received any formal Chinese language instruction. This course focuses on Chinese reading, especially some classic and modern Chinese articles. And also some cultural elements and Chinese literature will be incorporated into the course. Students are expected to be familiar with the writing of Chinese characters, have more knowledge of modern and classic Chinese literature and develop some basic skills in Chinese writing.
Time: Saturday 1:30-3:30PM Starting: Jan. 19, 2013

(New kids will have placement tests. If they have already had some Chinese foundation, they can go to class B1 or B2.)
8. Chinese for Children from Chinese Heritage families (B1)
The course is designed for children who can listen and speak Chinese fairly well and
want to expand their skills in reading and writing Chinese. They have received at
least one semester formal language instruction. This course focuses on Chinese reading,
especially some classic and modern Chinese articles. And also some cultural elements
and Chinese literature will be incorporated into the course. Students are expected
to be familiar with the writing of Chinese characters, have more knowledge of modern
and classic Chinese literature and develop some basic skills in Chinese writing.
(This class is usually for kids aged from 10 to 12.)

10. Advanced Chinese for Children from Chinese Heritage families (From Chinese Link Book 7 or similar levels)
The course is designed for children who can listen and speak Chinese fairly well and have learnt Chinese either from an institution or from parents for a number of years and want to expand their skills in reading and writing Chinese. This course focuses on Chinese reading, especially some classic and modern Chinese articles. And also some cultural elements and Chinese literature will be incorporated into the course. Students are expected to be familiar with the writing of Chinese characters, have more knowledge of modern and classic Chinese literature and develop skills in Chinese writing.

11. After School at the Confucius Institute (ASCI) - Chinese Language and Culture
This is a language and culture enrichment program designed for Children age 6 to 12. It introduces the Chinese language and its colorful culture. Focus will be on basic conversation, entry level vocabulary and writing of Chinese characters. Students will become familiar with the language and develop communication skills through formal teaching and fun activities such as songs, crafts and games.
(We can divide kids into separate classes according to the levels of their Chinese competence if such need arises.)

12. Private Tutoring
Upon the request of parents, the Confucius Institute provides services of private tutoring of Chinese language. The number of students in the private tutoring is one or two.
