MTSU DANCE PROGRAM OVERVIEW


Middle Tennessee State University has the most extensive Dance Program in the State of Tennessee. Our program offers students a diverse and individualized course of study that prepares them for varied careers in dance and related areas. The program provides an environment conducive to comprehensive training in dance technique, performance, choreography and theoretical studies. The program offers a Dance Cognate in Theatre in the Department of Speech and Theatre, as well as a minor in Dance.

The dance program promotes academic quality by enhancing learning, teaching, scholarship, and leadership. Students have the opportunity to perform, choreograph and work alongside faculty and guest artists each semester.

Students graduating from our program will have the knowledge, skills and intellect to attend graduate programs, be employed in a variety of dance and arts related professions and contribute to the art form within a global society.  This program is distinctive in the United States and demonstrates the outstanding and visionary instruction in the arts at MTSU.


CURRICULUM

The dance program offers a variety of dance techniques including: Modern, Ballet, Pointe, Jazz, Tap and West African Dance. Additional courses in the curriculum include: Choreography, Dance Appreciation, Dance History, Dance Studies, Pedagogy, Creative Movement for Children and Senior Seminar. The program also offers Somatics-based courses including the Alexander Technique and Theory and Practice; The Body as an Instrument.


DANCE PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES

Students have ample opportunities to perform each semester in the MTSU Dance Theatre and Student Choreography Showcases. Auditions are required for MTSU Dance Theatre and student performances.
