The Relationship Between Memory and Sight Word Recognition in Students with Dyslexia
Master's Degree Thesis, August 1996
The present study examined the memory and word recognition skills of students with dyslexia. Thirty students with dyslexia in fourth through seventh grades were administered the Wide Range Assessment of Memory and'Learning and the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test. As hypothesized, it was found that students with dyslexia scored significantly below the norm for average students on the WRAML. Theyalso scored significantly lower in the area of verbal memory than in visual memory. Further, it was found that sight vocabulary could be significantly predicted by the General Memory Index of the WRAML. The results contribute importantly to the understanding of how dyslexia affects students' ability to learn to read.
