Ashley was born in Florida but grew up in Tennessee. He attended the University of Tennessee and finished with two Bachelors degrees, one in English and the other in Philosophy. He stayed on at UT for the graduate program in English, where he took a Masters degree with an emphasis in Creative Writing. Since graduating, Ashley has taught Freshman Composition at UT and American Literature for Everest College Online.

Ashley has lived in New Zealand for a time and in South Korea for a year, where he taught English to high school students. His novella, Libations, was published in Kaleidotrope August, 2011. Ashley's mother graduated with a degree from MTSU, and he is proud to join the faculty in Fall 2011.
