Birchall to Lecture on
"Onoto Watanna: Novelist, Screenwriter, Feminist, Poseur"

Diana Birchall will lecture on "Onoto Watanna: Novelist, Screenwriter, Feminist, Poseur" on Monday Nov. 5 at 6:00 PM in the Keathley University Center (KUC) #32 4

Winnifred Eaton/Onoto Watanna wrote the first novel published by an Asian-American. A prolific writer, whose career went from writing Japanese romances to writing about the Canadian prairie, she was also a fascinating woman who reinvented herself several times. Her life is of interest to students of late nineteenth-early twentieth century American and Canadian literature, Asian-American literature, as well as students of early twentieth-century Hollywood (Eaton did a stint as a scriptwriter) and women's studies. (For more information, check out http://www.dianabirchall.com/onoto.html or http://www.press.uillinois.edu/f01/birchall.html.)

Diana Birchall, Eaton's biographer and descendent, is a pretty interesting woman herself. A story analyst at Warner Brothers, she is also an author of historical romances and Jane Austen continuations. She will be talking about the many different roles that Winnifred Eaton played. There will be a "meet the author" reception and booksigning, sponsored by the Women's Studies Program at 5:30 in KUC 324.
