Environmental Health & Safety

Founded in 1973, the Environmental Science and Technology (ES&T) program at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) offers preparation for a wide variety of careers in environmental engineering technology, safety management, design and environmental consulting, loss control, industrial hygiene, as well as graduate degree programs in Occupational Health & Safety. The Environmental Health and Safety concentration includes course work in physics and engineering mechanics, engineering design, and safety.

Personal Philosophy of Teaching Environmental Health and Safety

  • The Environmental Health and Safety Program at MTSU is designed as a generalist program. It is blend of both Safety and Industrial Hygiene, with basic Environmental.
  • Safety is an applied discipline. Academic courses are only a part of the journey to becoming a Safety, Health, and Environmental professional, the classwork also includes industry-based projects. Engineering Technology and business/management related courses are included to provide the student with the real world skills necessary in the work environment.

MTSU Occupational Health and Safety and Industry Interactions

  • In order to compel &"real world" experience in our courses, class projects include safety inspections, research and development of safety plans in cooperation with local industry.
  • Safety Hazard Assessments, Job Safety Analysis, Industrial Hygiene Assessments and Sampling, with policies on various topics are typical assignments.

Major Professor

Dr. Carol Boraiko, CIH, CSP, Faculty Principle Investigator, is a public health professional of 30 plus years of experience with OSHA, Veterans Administration (hospital), chemical manufacturing industry, as well as MTSU. She is both a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and a Certified Safety professional (CSP) with a wide range of exposure assessment experience including toxic metals such as tin and lead in both occupational and environmental settings. Her doctoral degree is in Public Health, Industrial Hygiene from Temple University.
