Le Havre

France, 2011

A utopian dream of a comedy, Le Havre is set in the port city of Normandy where a young African refugee comes under the protection of a French shoeshine and his neighbors - as the authorities work to deport him. Aki Kaurismaki, the prolific Finnish filmmaker influenced by Charlie Chaplin and Jean Renoir, reminds us of the modest charms and fleeting beauties of hardship, and of how easy it is, in the face of cruelty, to behave decently. Le Havre is comedy/drama that's sweet, sad, and uplifting in equal measure.
