At MTSU, Dr. Akins teaches courses in electronic music production and musicianship. His new books "The Fundamentals of MIDI Production and Synthesizer Programming" are being used as texts for the introductory MIDI course. He is also the faculty advisor for the student organization, The Society for Electronic Music. In addition to teaching, he actively writes, records and performs on a national level as a solo piano artist. His most recent album, Spirit Touch, has received world wide acclaim. It all began at age 12, when Joseph became the saxophone player for his father's country-rock band. Following high school, he toured across the States with the pop-rock band, Blaze. The next year, he released his first solo album of new wave rock. Then as an undergraduate student at the University of Tennessee, he became obsessed with jazz piano and electronic music. While there, he studied with the jazz great, Jerry Coker, whom inspired him to teach. Continuing with his studies as a graduate student at Radford University, he was awarded a teaching fellowship in jazz and the prestigious most creative thesis award. Following, Dr. Akins freelanced for several years as a musician and educator during which time he released his next solo album, Keys to the Heart. In the year 2000, he was invited to join the faculty at the prestigious Department of Recording Industry at MTSU (see image). In 2006, he completed a Doctorate in Education from Tennessee State University. Since, he has released two successful albums, Masterpeace and Spirit Touch.
