Marsha Barsky, Assistant Professor, teaches courses in contemporary dance, choreography, the Alexander Technique, and dance studies. Barsky serves as the Director of Dance at MTSU, and as the artistic director for the MTSU Dance Theatre. Barsky developed MTSU's Bachelor’s of Science degree program, the first of its kind in Tennessee. Barsky was the awarded the MTSU Foundation's 2014 - 2015 Outstanding Achievement in Instructional Technology Award.
She received her BFA in Dance from Arizona State University and her MFA in Performance and Choreography from the University of Colorado, Boulder. Marsha has trained in contemporary dance, somatic modalities, the Alexander Technique and yoga with many of the field's most notable teachers both in the US and abroad, including David Dorfman, Bebe Miller, Liat Waysbort, Nada Diachenko, Michelle Ellsworth, Elina Mooney, Cliffe Keuter, Joe Goode, Mary Fitzgerald and members of Ballet Preljocaj.
She has been a company member of Desert Dance Theatre and Shelter Repertory Dance Theatre, and has danced in works by Gabriel Masson, Sean Curran, Pat Graney, Bill Evans, Kim Neal Nofsinger, Ana Baer, Stephanie Batten-Bland, and Ivan Pulinkala. Her choreography has been presented throughout the US, and she is the founder of Nashville based Company Rose, a contemporary dance company that offers project-based performances at venues throughout the city. She has collaborated with numerous visual artist and musicians including David Heustess, Kristofer Hill, Colin O'Donohoe, VORTEX Percussion Ensemble, Benton C Bainbridge, Mark Hosford, Liz Scofield, SoPercussion, Aaron Walters, and Jamey Simmons.
As a university professor, Marsha has taught a broad array of classes in the studio and in the classroom. She has been on faculty at Vanderbilt University's Blair School of Music, Western Kentucky University and CU Boulder, and has taught at numerous studios, festivals, intensives and residencies across the country, and France and Switzerland. In 2016, she was named Distinguished Foreign Expert at Chengdu, University in Chengdu China. She serves on the Executive Board for the Tennessee Association of Dance, the review board for the Journal of Dance Education, where she has published many reviews. She is a certified yoga instructor, through the Eldorado Yoga Ashram in Boulder, CO (2002). After years of study and research, she became a certified teacher of the Alexander Technique (ATI) under the direction of Robin Gilmore, in 2011.
