Paul Fischer , professor of recording industry, earned his B.S. in Speech (Radio/TV/Film) from Northwestern University (1979). His Master's degree in Popular Culture from Bowling Green State University centered on the thesis, "The Case For Scholarly Study of Rock 'n' Roll: A Philosophy of Education. (1981)" His PhD. is in American Culture Studies, also from Bowling Green State University (1995).

Over the years he has worked in record retail, operated his own mobile deejay business, produced on-campus events, worked in concert promotion and production, run the box office of a ten thousand seat arena, and served as a celebrity broker. He also did on site and marketing work for the Live Nation’s AmSouth Amphitheater in Nashville before it closed.
Dr. Fischer's research interests include monitoring challenges to popular music as expression, application of literacy and cultural theory to popular culture, and examination of the roots and evolution of American popular musics. A new area he is exploring is the origin and development of recording technologies and the careers of the inventors. He is an active member of the American Studies Association, and the International Association for the Study of Popular Music (IASPM). He Served as President of IASPM's United States branch from 2000 to 2002, and as Past President from 2002 - 2004. More recently he has taught a study abroad class In England five times. He has written entries on Music Censorship for the Encyclopedia Of The First Amendment and The Grove Dictionary Of American Music. He is the Department’s Faculty Senator and serves on the Senate’s steering committee.
