An associate professor in the Department of Accounting and Interim Chair, Dr. Benson earned her B.A. in economics and business administration from Vanderbilt University and her Juris Doctorate from the University of Georgia. An associate professor in the Department of Accounting and Interim Chair, Dr. Benson earned her B.A. in economics and business administration from Vanderbilt University and her Juris Doctorate from the University of Georgia. Dr. Benson teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in business, commercial, and health law. She draws on her legal experience and her love of teaching and research in designing research and classroom activities. Her research focuses on emerging issues related to fraud, accountant liability, contracts, emerging healthcare issues, and effective pedagogy. She publishes discipline-based and practitioner-related articles regionally, nationally and internationally to benefit professionals and academics, including owners of professional firms, accountants, and scholars. Her work and expertise has been recognized by The Federal Research Division, Library of Congress, the New York Society of CPAs, and CNBC (where she appeared as a legal scholar on an American Greed episode of “A Most Generous Criminal”). Her teaching has earned recognition and awards, including the Outstanding Teaching Award, MTSU Foundation (2013) and Master Teacher Finalist in the international Charles M. Hewitt Competition, Academy of Legal Studies in Business (2013), and the Bridgestone/Firestone Distinguished Assistant Professorship (recognizing teaching, research and service), Jones College of Business (2012-13). Professor Benson is continuously developing and implementing innovative student-centered learning activities to facilitate student success, such as an EXL course in which students take part in the “Legal Beagle News Show”, a classroom activity to gain skills in critical thinking and advocacy as students debate recent U.S. Supreme Court cases impacting businesses and a unique QuizBowl Quest collaborative competition project, with a goal of improving mastery of the material on the Regulation section of the CPA exam.
