Tom has been involved in the music business one way or another for the past 40 plus years. He was a professional writer in Nashville for the greater part of the 70’s and 80’s as well as a musician who toured throughout the US and Canada with Nashville based recording artists. He wrote songs for various publishing companies as a staff writer and on an individual song basis with publishers in both Nashville and Los Angeles. Tom had many songs recorded over the years, some being top 40 and top 10 hits.

Tom first recorded with a band called “The Smoke Ring” in Memphis when he was still in high school. The band was produced by Allen Reynolds and Dickey Lee. After college, he moved to Nashville to pursue a songwriting career. He soon became close friends with many young liked minded writers such as Don Schlitz, Hugh Moffatt, Kevin Welch and Jim Casey among others. A few years later he recorded as a solo artist for RCA Records and Crazy Mama Records. He also recorded with a band formed with his wife (writer/artist, Suzee “Suchi” Waters Benjamin) who he met on stage while she was singing at a local club. They have released CD’s on their own independent label (Soulo Records) in recent years. Currently they write for their own publishing company and manage its catalog. Tom has been an ASCAP writer and publisher for many years.

In addition to Tom’s music business background, he attended Vanderbilt University where he earned a Master’s degree in teaching. He taught in Nashville and Dickson Tennessee before moving with his family to Hawaii in 1999. He earned a PhD at the University of Hawaii and taught at the UH College of Education for many years. He lived on Maui and during those years he worked on all the Hawaiian islands as well as presented at state, national, and international conferences.

Tom and Suchi returned to Nashville in 2016. Music and close friendships, many with songwriters and musicians, called them back to Music City. They’re enjoying being back to their music home and are amazed at the growth and vibrancy of Nashville. They have two married children who live in Seattle and a grand-daughter.
