The .jpg (or jpeg), .gif, and .png file types all work on the web.

Video file types (extensions) that display on the web

The .mp4 file type is the most compatible file type for use on the web as it will play on Macs, PCs, and mobile devices. All video files need to be closed captioned and a transcript should also be provided in order to meet accessibility guidelines.

D2L and Audio and Video Files

If you have a couple small video or audio files, it is okay to upload them into your D2L course. But if you have larger or several video and audio files to share with your class, it is best to store them outside your course and link to them. Two of the most popular options on campus for storing your audio and video files are MTSU's Media server and YouTube.

  • Request an MTMedia account and directions for linking to your videos on the MTMedia server (Windows XP) and (Mac)
  • If you have a gmail account, this will work as your login to your YouTube account. Consider the various video privacy options provided by YouTube.
