Surveys and Data
The survey components of the Foundations of Excellence in the
First-Year project were designed to provide the empirical basis
for determining MTSU's level of achievement on the nine
performance indicators outlined by the project. This research
portion of the project collected data from several sources,
including the chief academic officer, chief student affairs
administrator, faculty and students. Information from faculty and
administrators was gathered by the Center for the Study of Higher
Education (CSHE) at Pennsylvania State University, the Policy
Center's research partner in the Foundations of Excellence
project. A random sample of MTSU faculty received this survey
during March, 2004, with instructions to return the survey
directly to CSHE. For more information, click here.
Student engagement in the campus was measured
through administration of the National Survey of Student
Engagement (NSSE). The NSSE is designed to assess five factors
that have been found to positively impact success in college:
level of academic challenge, enriching educational experiences,
student-faculty interaction, active and collaborative learning,
and a supportive campus environment. The NSSE was administered to
a sample of MTSU students during the spring semester, 2004. For
more information about the NSSE, please go to
