MTSU's University Writing Center

The University Writing Center (located in Walker Library, 3rd Floor, Room 362) is one of the best resources you'll find as a writer at MTSU, in your composition courses and beyond. At the Writing Center, you can receive valuable one-on-one feedback on your writing from a knowledgable and supportive staff of writing consultants that are always happy to help. You can make appointments online here, email uwcenter@mtsu.edu, or call (615) 904-8237 to schedule a session. Drop-in sessions are also welcome, though are subject to the availablility of consultants. Online appointments are also available.

Sometimes, just getting another set of eyes on your writing can be invaluable. Sometimes you might have questions about whether a certain section works or not. And sometimes, you just need help getting started. No matter the class, the kind of writing project, or what stage of the writing process you're in, the staff at the Writing Center can help.

The Makerspace

The Makerspace, located on the 2nd floor of the James E. Walker Library, features a great team of knowledgeable staff who provide resources and advice for a wide variety of media applications, including personal tech coach appointments. They also offer training and assistance on an impressive collection of on-site equipment like virtual reality hardware, several 3D printers, and a laser cutter/etcher. They offer unique facilities to enable exploration for learning experiences, collaboration, and creative expression and welcome users of all abilities, disciplines, levels and interests.

OWL @ Purdue

Another excellent resource for writers is Purdue University’s Online Writing Lab (OWL). This website includes tutorials and handouts on several writing subjects, including citation guides for MLA, APA, and Chicago styles, academic writing, grammar, and visual rhetoric.

MLA Style Center

If you need quick answers for your MLA questions, the MLA has created a style center that provides examples and charts for citing in MLA 8. This website also includes information about how the style has evolved, and information about academic dishonesty and how to avoid it. 

The Chicago Manual of Style Online

Like the MLA, the Chicago Manual of Style also offers an online resource. Although brief, this resource is quite thorough with examples for many types of citations.

Writing Commons

Writing Commons is a "free, global, peer-reviewed, open-education resource for college-level writers, college faculty, and the everyday writer." There are articles on topics ranging from informational literacy to the writing process, and there are even articles on MLA citation. Check out this source if you would like more information on topics that are covered in your classes or if you are personally interested in certain aspects of writing. 

Grammar Girl 

Struggling with whether to use accept or except? Don't know if you should use e.g. or i.e.? Wondering what in the world is a comma splice and how do you fix it? Grammar Girl has the solution to almost all of your grammar woes in fun and easy to comprehend answers and examples. This website is a great secondary resource to any writing handbook. 

Microsoft Office

Did you know that, as an MTSU student, you can download desktop applications for the full Microsoft Office Suite free through your university email account? Find out how in this handy step by step guide to accessing your free copy of great programs like Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.
