Dr. Heather Brown Associate Professor, Engineering Technology and Industrial Studies Middle Tennessee State University
1) How did you become interested in math or science field while at high school? I was in 4th grade when I realized that I had an interest in Math. I was always competing with my fellow classmates on getting done with my multiplication quizzes first so I knew that I had a knack for math.
2) Why did you choose to work in your field? I was excited about the opportunity to work outside, build structures and utilize my math skills to do that. Civil Engineering was a perfect fit.
3) What are some areas of your job that you like the most? I enjoy the combination of office work and field work. I like the design aspect of the materials going into the project. Working with my hands and also on the computer is a great part of the job.
4) What one thing would you tell a middle or high school girl who is considering majoring in STEM in college? Women in math and science fields is very important because we provide a balance to the "think tank' behind the science and math principles. You need to have good critical thinking skills and be able to solve problems using theory. If you like seeing the result of a problem and being part of the solution then STEM fields are for you.
4) Please provide a short biography.
Dr. Heather J. Brown is Director and Associate Professor with the Concrete Industry Management Program at Middle Tennessee State University. She earned her Doctor of Philosophy in Civil Engineering from Tennessee Technological University in 2001. Her specialization is in the area of Construction Materials. She has authored several papers for Transportation Research Board, Concrete International, International Center for Aggregate Research, American Society for Testing and Materials, and American Society for Engineering Education. She worked as a research assistant for the Tennessee Department of Transportation for four years in concrete, asphalt and aggregates. Dr. Brown is a member of American Concrete Institute, Prestressed/Precast Concrete Institute, American Society of Civil Engineers, and serving as the faculty advisor for the ACI, PCI and SAWIC student chapters. Her teaching experience is in the areas of surveying, geotechnical engineering, construction materials, masonry design, pavement design, concrete fundamentals, troubleshooting concrete problems, and construction estimating. Her current research work is in the area of fiber reinforced concrete, fly ash and slag performance, pervious concrete and construction tolerances.
