The Middle Tennessee District History Day competition is part of National History Day, an extensive educational program designed to engage middle school and high school students actively in the learning of history. Students undertake research projects individually or in groups and compete in a series of competitions at the local, district, state, and national levels. Each spring, the History Department at Middle Tennessee hosts a district competition for public, private, and home school students throughout middle Tennessee. Participants compete in one of five categories: research paper (individual only), documentary, exhibit, performance or web site interpretation. Each year the National History Day organization publishes a curriculum guide explaining the year’s theme and possible ideas for student entries. Students are required to connect their entry to the theme and demonstrate their familiarity with primary and secondary resources. We encourage teachers to hold local competitions and to send their top finishers to the Middle Tennessee District Competition. Teachers please be prepared for a restricted number of entries from each school at the 2009 District competition.

The top three finishers in each category at the district level advance to the state competition, Tennessee History Day, held in Nashville in Apri, 2009l. The first and second place entries in each division at the state level are invited to compete in the National History Day competition, held each June at the University of Maryland in College Park.

We look forward to seeing you at the 2009 Middle Tennessee District Competition on Friday, Friday February 20. The 2009 theme is "The Individual in History." Please check over the summer for more information on the Middle Tennessee District 2009 Competition or at the National History Day website.
