Welcome to the Human Sciences Home Page! We are so glad that you are interested in our programs, all of which focus on individuals, families and their communities. Whether you are interested in early childhood development or interior design, you will find a curriculum built on theory and skill development. Our goal is to help you develop a foundation for continued learning in your professional and personal endeavors throughout your life.
In each of the program areas, you will find a balance between classroom learning and experiential learning. For example, students in Textiles, Merchandising and Design have the opportunity to attend the Dallas Apparel Mart and participate in a New York Study Tour. Interior Design students visit the Biltmore in Asheville, North Carolina and may elect to participate in a New York and European Study Tour. Early Childhood and Family & Consumer Science Education majors are placed in public school settings to observe and work with teachers whereas Nutrition and Food Science majors have opportunities to work in health care facilities. Child Development and Family Studies students participate in service-learning courses and two internships tailored to their career goals.
One of the things that we are most proud of in this department is the community atmosphere. Graduating seniors comment on the quality advising that they have received as well as the accessibility of the faculty. Students feel a sense of belonging where they are known on an individual basis. In addition, we have several student organizations that provide a forum for student participation in their chosen profession. These are just a few of the things that you need to know about the Human Sciences Department. Please let us know if you need additional information after you have reviewed our web site. We hope that you will join the Human Sciences family at MTSU!
