The MTSU Scholars Academy program was created to serve the needs of minority students by providing them with a quality education in a supportive learning environment. Students are accepted to the Scholars Academy based on a combination of several factors including high school GPA, ACT/SAT test scores, a complete application, references, a personal interview, and an evaluation of other data such as involvement and community service. In particular, the Scholars Academy seeks to enhance the freshman learning experience by providing the following:

Academic Impact

• Better preparation for college-level general education courses
• The expectations of college-level research and data analysis
• On-site tutoring and mentoring
• Student advising and course selection

Social Impact

• Greater awareness of the benefits and challenges of independence
• Greater awareness of interpersonal strengths and challenges
• Increased opportunities to engage collegiate students in serious conversations about college

Long-term Impact

• Increased retention and graduation rates of minority students
• Earlier identification of major/career "mismatches" and subsequent educational adjustments

Summer Institute

The Scholars Academy Summer Institute is a five-week residential program designed to provide students with an opportunity for career exploration by working with various MTSU colleges and departments in the surrounding community. Students participating in the program are housed on the MTSU campus for duration of the Summer Institute, attend two freshman-level courses (at no cost), and take part in team-building exercises, leadership training, the summer reading program, and service learning projects.
