Abstract: This session is designed to introduce educators to online social media and Web 2.0 tools and to discover best methods for incorporating the use of the tools in teaching and learning. During the session presenters will define social media and explore ways that social media and Web 2.0 tools can be used to improve student learning and teaching.
Description: Presenters of this session will take audience members through an adventurous journey from planning to teaching an online course, with optional face-to-face class meetings, primarily designed for faculty members of higher education to explore the use of Web 2.0/Learning 2.0 tools for teaching and learning. The discussion areas of emphasis will include the following: defining social media, defining social networking, using RSS and newsfeeds, using blogs and microblogs, defining and using wikis, using various online communications tools and creating user-generated content for learning 2.0. The presenters will cover uses of various Web 2.0 tools for teaching and learning, highlighting selected tools such as Facebook, Del.icio.us, iGoogle, Google Reader, Netvibes, Blogger, Edublogs, Twitter, TypePress, Word Press, Wetpaint, MediaWiki, PBWiki, Skype, iVocalize, Flickr, Audacity, YouTube and Teacher Tube.Presenters will also discuss the successes and challenges (best practices and worst practices) of designing and teaching an online course for social media for faculty, ways to encourage course participation and experimentation from busy educators, and working collaboratively with other educators from across the state of Tennessee. Outcomes of the course will also be discussed. Presenters will share specific classroom examples generated from course participants and discuss practical ways to incorporate Web2.0/ Learning 2.0 in everyday coursework for improved classroom learning.
