Title: The Entrepreneurial Learner: How People Learn-to-Learn and Learn To Apply What They Have Learned

Abstract: We teach and train people to respond to short-term, fact-specific, single tasks then lament the reality that they cannot address a new learning situation in an imaginative yet practical manner. We preach the need for enabling learning-to-learn, yet model the same old teach-and-test methodologies. Represented as Entrepreneurial Learning, this session is the culmination of over 30 years of observation and research on how people actually learn-to-learn and what we must do to enable it in students.

Description: We teach and train people to respond to short-term, fact-specific, single tasks then lament the reality that they cannot address a new learning situation in an imaginative yet practical manner. We preach the need for enabling learning-to-learn, yet model the same old teach-and-test methodologies. Drawing upon his many years of formal education, multiple certifications ranging from Elementary Education and High School English to Electro-Mechanical Trades, plus 18 years spent in business and industry, the presenter has captured over 30 years of observation into his award-winning research on adult learning. Your presenter will use these observations and experiences to (1) make connections with tried-and-true theories on social interaction and learning styles, such as Meyers-Briggs and Kolb’s Learning Styles; (2) explain the problems associated with contemporary content delivery and learning-to-learn instruction; and, (3) provide recommendations for strategies to encourage and enable adult learning across a lifetime. This session is aimed at all of those who are teachers or trainers, at any level, involved in either face-to-face or distance learning instruction.
