Instructions for scanning images and slides on ITD: Instructional Technology
equipment.
Hewlett Packard ScanJet 4C Scanner:
Images
- Start the scanning software by choosing Start >
Programs > Image Scanning and Editing > DeskScan
II from the Windows95 desktop.
- Lift the scanner cover and place the object (photo,
drawing, 3D object) face down on the glass and in-line with
the edge of the scanning
surface.
- Click on the "Preview" button in the lower-left corner of
the DeskScan II window. It will take 15-20 seconds for your
preview image to appear.
Don't take
the object off the scanner until after the final
scan.
- If your image is too small, click on the "Zoom" button to
enlarge the preview.
- Use the "selection" tool to create a square around that
part of the image you want in the final scan.
-
Change the "Type" and "Print Path" options to suit your
needs.
- "Type" should be set to "Sharp Black and White
Drawing," "Sharp Black and White Photo," or "Sharp
Millions of Colors,"
depending on the
type of object you're scanning.
- "Print Path" is typically set to "Screen." This scans
the object at 75 dpi (screen resolution). If you plan to
print the image,
you should change the
print path to reflect the printer you will be using.
- Click on the "Brightness/Contrast" button to
automatically adjust the brightness and contrast of the
image.
- Use the slider bars to "Scale" the image if needed.
- Click on the "Final" button to start the final scan and
save your image. Before the final scan starts you will be
prompted to save your image.
It is
recommended that you save the image in a Tagged Image File
Format (TIFF/TIF). This format is viewable on Macs and PCs
and can be easily converted to a GIF or
JPEG for placement in Web pages.
- Use an image editing program like Adobe Photoshop to
correct or enhance the image.

Hewlett Packard DeskScan
II Interface
Polaroid SprintScan 35: 35MM
Slides
- Start the slide scanning software by choosing Start
> Programs > Image Scanning and Editing >
SprintScan from the Windows95 desktop.
- The "Polaroid SprintScan Version x.xx" dialog box should
appear. Click on the window's "OK" button.

SprintScan 35 Interface
- Hold the slide to be scanned
in front of you as if it were a photograph you were
viewing
- Turn the slide 180°
counterclockwise so that it is upside down.
- Insert the slide into the
slot on the top of the SprintScan. Push the slide down until
it catches; a little more than half of the slide's cardboard
border
will remain visible. Do not
force the slide.
- In the window, click "Preview." The slide will be scanned
into memory and displayed on the right side of the "Control
Panel" window.
If part of the slide is cut
off, remove the slide from the scanner, reinsert it properly,
and click "Preview" again.
- In the image display portion
of the window, use the mouse to drag the white rectangular
frame over the portion of the scanned image
that is important to you. The frame can be stretched
vertically and horizontally. It's important to get everything
significant inside the white frame because
everything outside of it will be lost in the next step. Don't
worry if the image is tilted a couple of degrees and some
blackness is inside the frame. Just make
sure everything important is inside the frame.
- Click "Scan."
- The final scanned image will appear in a new window. If
the image is not to your liking, repeat these steps beginning
with Step 3. Otherwise,
click File >
Save As in the new window. Specify the image's format
with the drop-down menu in the lower-left side of the "Save
As" window. Enter a descriptive filename
for the image. Then click "OK."
- Finally, use Adobe
Photoshop, Microsoft Paint, or some other graphics editing
program to trim, tint, and touch up your work.
