- Uses mms (Microsoft Media Server) and http protocol
- Stored as an .ASF file (Advanced Streaming Format)
- mms works with Internet Explorer only (currently)
- For use in Netscape, must use an ASX file or be embedded into page
- ASX is a XML file to reference a URL (filename.asx)
- Windows Media Player uses a re-scalable window
- Supports Pay-Per-View Streams Pre-Packaged

Real Streaming Server
- Requires Windows NT Server, UNIX, Linux, Solaris, or similar server
- Uses http and rtsp protocols
- Server that costs ($) supports 800 streams
- Stored as .rm files (Real Media)
- In addition to RealAudio, RealVideo, has 2 new media types - RealText and RealPix.
- Supports SMIL (Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language); uses RealAudio, Video, Text and Pix.
- RealPix can use JPEG's and GIF's but images must first be converted using JPEGTran or the RealPix bandwidth calculator
