MTSU has set up a server that will stream Real Media files. Streaming media is desirable, especially when working with larger files, because the person viewing your files will not have to wait for the entire file to download before it can be viewed. Streamed files are viewable as they download. The beginning of the file is downloaded into a buffer. When the buffer is filled the media begins playing as the buffer continues to refill itself. Larger buffers are created for those who view your files over a modem in order to assure seamless playback. Smaller buffers are created for people who are viewing your files over a network connection.
Faculty and departments can use MTSU's Real server to stream video or audio files, Real SlideShow presentations, PowerPoint presentations and other Real Media compatible formats. MTSU's examples of streaming media resources include the Gore CenterÕs streaming oral histories http://janus.mtsu.edu/history/excerpts.htm and Donnetta McDaniel's (a graduate student in biology) streaming videos of a pig dissection http://www.mtsu.edu/~vpig/.
If you are interested in using the streaming server first call the help desk (extension 5345) and request a Real server account. After you have received your username and password contact ITD-Instructional Technology (904-8189) for information on publishing with Real Producer, Real Presenter, or Real SlideShow. You may also schedule an appointment with ITD-IT to help you create and publish your project.
