TECHNOLOGY & YOU @ MTSU

As an MTSU student, you'll find technology is making campus life more convenient, enhancing your education, and preparing you for a technologically oriented workplace and world.

State-of-the-art system

MTSU's academic computing system (a.k.a. frank) is a Hewlett-Packard 9000 V2200, a RISC-based machine running the UNIX operating system.

Computing accounts

Get connected with an account on MTSU's academic computing system for access to email, the Internet, and software packages on frank. Your use of the computing and network resources at MTSU is governed by the MTSU Computer and Network Acceptable Use Policy.

Internet and email

Your MTSU student computing account gives you Internet access. (If you're dialing into the system using a modem and not using an Internet service provider, the Internet access is text-based.) You can stay in touch with your classmates and instructors with email and surf the Internet to access information from MTSU and all over the world. With your student account, you can register for MTSU classes via the Web, access data from thousands of archives, transfer files, search library catalogs, access databases and image libraries, and join discussion groups. Type netmenu at the frank prompt for a user-friendly menu of Internet tools.

Your student ID

Your MTSU student ID is more than just identification. It's your passport to campus services. Use your ID for meal plans; check cashing; access to the library, Student Recreation Center, and computer labs; and admittance to campus events. With Raider Funds, your ID becomes a debit card. Deposit money in your personal Raider account, and use your ID for campus laundry machines and vending machines, photocopies and laser printing at the library, fees, meals at campus food service locations, and items from Phillips Bookstore. The ID office is in Murphy Center, northwest corner, track level. For information about Raider Funds, contact the Business Office.

WebMT

Connect to WebMT from MTSU's Web page to access many academic services. You'll need your student ID number and your personal access code (PAC). With WebMT you can register for classes; check for open sections; view your class schedule; verify/change your address; view your complete transcript; display registration holds, your semester grades, and grade/transcript holds; check your financial aid status, admission status, and account balance; and change your access code. Undergraduate students can determine which courses are needed to complete their program requirements for graduation. (WebMT requires graphic access to the Internet.)

InfoMT kiosks

InfoMT kiosks — at Business and Aerospace Building, Keathley University Center, Student Recreation Center, and the MTSU library — make it easier for you to get information and take care of University business. Kiosks (similar to ATM banking machines) are designed for self-service convenience. Through InfoMT, you may view your transcript, course schedule, campus map, MTSU events schedule, and more. You can also check your student account balance. From the kiosk, fax documents such as transcripts using coin or credit card payment or get a printout using the kiosk's laser printer. New services continue to be added.

In class and lab

Technology is part of your learning experience at MTSU. Departments from art to biology, from journalism to nursing, are making computers an integral part of education. You may also find yourself in one of MTSU's master classrooms — specially-equipped classrooms that use computing, networking, and display technologies to move education beyond the chalkboard.

Library resources

Be a better researcher with the MTSU library's technology-based tools. With the online catalog, use a computer terminal to search for books by title, subject, author, or call number. You can also access the online catalog from terminals outside the library through MTSU's gopher or Web site. At the library's Electronic Information Center, search CD-ROM and online subject indexes for articles on various topics. Also available both in the library and via the library's Web page are the InfoTrac Search Bank, which indexes over 1600 periodicals, and Lexis-Nexis, which provides access to the full text of thousands of newspaper, newswire, and magazine articles plus legal, government, and business resources.

Adaptive technologies

Adaptive technology stations that facilitate the computing needs of students with visual or learning disabilities are available at the MTSU library, KOM 350 University Computing Lab, and Wood-Felder housing lab. These stations feature special hardware and software such as speech synthesizers, large monitors, braille printers, scanners, and document cameras.

Software/supplies

Phillips Bookstore in Keathley University Center offers microcomputer hardware and software at educational discount prices as well as computing supplies.

A. Students with a current ID may use computers in University Computer Labs located in Business and Aerospace Building S137, Kirksey Old Main 350/351, and at MTSU's Instructional Technology Support Center (McWherter Learning Resources Center 101A and 101B). Many departments also have computer labs for classes, research, and general use.

Q. During what hours is the MTSU academic computing system available?

A. Except for downtime for hardware maintenance and software updates, the system is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Q. How do I access MTSU computing services from my personal computer?

A. You'll need a student computing account and a modem. The dial-in numbers are 898-5908, 898-5176, and for 28.8 kbps modems 898-5350. The correct configuration is 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity.

Q. How can I get access to the Internet?

A. A student computing account on MTSU's academic computing system can be used to access the Internet. If you're dialing into the system using a modem, however, MTSU's lines provide text-based (not graphical) access. For graphical access using a modem, you'll need to sign up with an Internet service provider. Call the Information Technology Division at 898-5345 for more information.

Q. What is my Internet email address?

A. The address for your MTSU account is: username@mtsu.edu. (You'll get your username when you get your account.)

Q. I've heard of "gophers" and "the Web." How do I get to them and what do I do with them?

A. Gopher servers and the World Wide Web are tools for accessing Internet information. MTSU has a gopher and a Web site providing information about MTSU, access to the MTSU library, and links to other Internet information. To access MTSU's gopher, type gopher at the frank prompt. Type lynx at the frank prompt to access a text-based Web browser called lynx. For graphical Web browsing, you can visit the University Computer Labs or use your modem and an Internet service.
