Adjunct Faculty Resources

Welcome to the Adjunct Faculty Resources webpage. Adjunct Faculty are hired by academic departments to teach MTSU online course offerings as well as Regents Online Degree Program (RODP) courses. The hiring criteria are the same for both programs.

Adjunct Faculty hired to teach online courses are required to attend training on the learning environment system (LES) supported by MTSU or have documented prior experience using the learning environment system supported by this university.

Hiring/Compensation

  • Adjunct Faculty Hiring Process
    The hiring of adjunct faculty (Undergraduate and Graduate) is handled through the academic department in which you are teaching. You will be asked to submit various documents during the hiring process. The Adjunct Faculty Hiring Checklist will identify those documents required by the academic department.
  • Adjunct Pay Criteria
    Adjunct Faculty are paid according to the guidelines found in the adjunct pay criteria or their rank within their academic departments as follows:

Training

  • Desire2Learn (D2L)
    Training is mandatory on the learning environment system supported by MTSU prior to course instruction. Workshops or one-on-one consultation may be scheduled by contacting the Faculty Instructional Technology Center (FITC) staff at 615-904-8189. You may also register online for workshops.
  • Preventing Sexual Harassment
    Online sexual harassment training is available for all employees. Successful completion of this training is required for all adjunct faculty. The MTSU policy statement on sexual harassment and other resources are available on the Institutional Equity and Compliance web site.
  • RODP semester updates
    This site contains a link to semester start up information for faculty teaching RODP courses. This page includes specific course information as well as TBR updates.

Faculty Support Services

  • Faculty Instructional Technology Center (FITC)
    The FITC assists faculty with the creation of technology-based instructional materials for their courses. Workshops or one-on-one consultation may be scheduled by contacting the Faculty Instructional Technology Center (FITC) staff at 615-904-8189.
  • Instructional Technology Support Center (ITSC)
    The ITSC provides various instructional media resources and audio-visual equipment. You may contact ITSC at 615-898-5191.
  • MTSU Helpdesk
    The Helpdesk at Middle Tennessee State University provides online technical support for faculty, staff, and students available 24/7 during the semester.
  • RODP Help Desk
    The RODP Helpdesk offers technical support 24/7 at 866-550-7637. ASKRODP is an online site that provides help with RODP registration.
  • D2L Support
    This site is designed to help faculty and students learn about Desire2Learn (the learning environment software supported by MTSU and the TBR) and to locate resources and request help with the system.
  • Learning, Teaching and Innovative Technologies Center (LT&ITC)
    The mission of the LT&ITC is to create a community of faculty who develop, improve and integrate creative and effective use of appropriate pedagogy and technologies to enhance student learning.
  • SMARTHINKING
    SMARTHINKING is an online tutoring and writing service that helps students succeed. SMARTHINKING provides people, technology and training to help institutions offer their students outstanding academic support. Education providers work with SMARTHINKING to increase student achievement and enhance learning. SMARTHINKING connects students to qualified e-structors (online tutors) anytime, from any Internet connection.
  • Turnitin
    Turnitin is an online research resource designed to help educators and students develop a better sense of what plagiarism means in the information age, and to teach the planning, organizational, and citation skills essential for producing quality writing and research.

Proctoring Services

  • Distance Learning Test Center
    The Distance Learning Test Center provides exam services for MTSU students taking distance learning courses. The Test Center is located in the Kirksey Old Main (KOM), Room 126.
  • RODP Proctoring Information
    RODP students may be required to take supervised exams. The student is responsible for making proctoring arrangements.

Teaching and Learning

  • Instructor Responsibilities
    Online instructors are responsible for:
    • Logging into their courses before the semester begins to edit the course materials, i.e. calendar, professor contact information, welcome message. Faculty may contact the Faculty Instructional Technology Center for assistance.
    • Grading student projects, assignments, and tests in a timely manner.
    • Creating a high level of interaction between students and instructor is expected in an online environment.
    • Submitting final course grades by deadlines provided by MTSU and/or the RODP.
    • Incorporating effective teaching techniques to enhance the student learning experience.
    • Completing, successfully, the online Sexual Harassment Training provided for all MTSU personnel before (or shortly after) the beginning of the course.
    • Reviewing Teaching Expectations required of all RODP faculty.

      The Sloan Consortium shares effective practices online.
    • Principles of Good Practices
      The Southern Regional Education Board has identified several principles that signify a quality online course. This document was developed to assure students about the quality of courses and programs at their Electronic Campus.

  • Disabled Student Services
    This is the homepage of the Disabled Students Services at Middle Tennessee State University. This site provides information to students, staff, faculty and visitors on ADA compliance issues.

Library

  • Distance Learning Library
    The James E Walker Library includes a Distance Learning Library Services and Resources site that caters to the distance learner by providing helpful web resources and instructions for accessing library material from a distance. Access to the library’s Distance Education Librarian is also available on this site.

    This is the virtual library established by the Tennessee Board of Regents to provide resources and services to students enrolled in the Regents Online Degree Program.
