Course Revision: MTSU Online / Hybrid Courses

Quick Links

Definition
MTSU Online and Hybrid Course Development Agreements run for 3-year terms.  When these agreements expire, course designers are eligible for payment of a revision stipend of $1,000, if they wish to renew their agreements and substantially (50% or more of the content) revise their courses.  All revised courses are reviewed and approved using the same process that is used for new course design.

Please Note:

  • Compensation cannot be paid if the course revisions are completed prior to revision agreement approval.
  • Faculty Peer Assistants (FPA) are assigned to each faculty member who is revising an existing online course, and the same review and approval processes used for new course development apply.

Course Completion Deadlines*

*These deadlines are suggestions and are more flexible than for new course design.

Online and Hybrid Course Revision Agreement
A revision contract (obtained from Distance Learning Faculty Services) must be completed, approved and placed on file in the Distance Learning Faculty Services Office prior to completing course revision.

Course Shell
To begin course revision, request a development shell by completing and submitting the Course Development Request Form.  Course content from a previous semester shell may be moved into a development shell for revision.  The content may then be moved to an active semester shell.  Instructions for moving content from shell to shell are as follows.

  1. Open the blank course that you want to copy the course content into.
  2. Click the Components link on the right side of the home page.
  3. Choose to copy from another org unit.
  4. Scroll down and choose the development shell that contains the course  content you  want to move.
  5. The screen will refresh. Choose the Select All check box.
  6. Click the next buttons at the bottom of the screen until you work through the wizard. When the button displays “done” go to the home page to review.

Please note:  Course designers are discouraged from revising course content in previous semester shells.  It is difficult to retrieve the content if the shells are deleted.

Course Revision
The following resources are available for the revision of online and hybrid courses:

  • FITC staff;
  • Assigned Faculty Peer Assistant (FPA);
  • D2L Course Design Tutorials;
  • Additional resource information – see Course Development:  MTSU Online and Hybrid.

Course Review and Approval
When a course revision is complete, the following process should be followed:

  • conduct a self-evaluation of the course using the Peer Review/Evaluation Form;
  • complete and submit the Add A User Request Form to request that the FPA and department chair be added to the course;
  • email the self-evaluation to the FPA to begin the peer review process;
  • the peer review is conducted, and the FPA shares it with the course designer;
  • the course designer may make any changes recommended by the FPA;
  • the FPA reviews changes made to the course for possible re-rating of the section(s) affected;
  • all actions taken are noted on the evaluation form;
  • the review form is submitted to the Distance Learning Faculty Services Office by the FPA;
  • the Chair Approval Form is attached to the evaluation and both documents are sent to the respective department chair for final review and course delivery approval.

Payment of Revision Fees
When the signed Course Approval Form is returned to Distance Learning Faculty Services, the pay instrument is completed to compensate the course designer.

Please Note:  An Online (or Hybrid) Course Revision Agreement must be completed, approved and placed on file in the Distance Learning Faculty Services Office prior to completing course revision or the revision fee cannot be paid.

Revision Exceptions
If substantial course revisions are necessary prior to contract expiration due to textbook changes or other extenuating circumstances, course designers can receive, with prior approval from Distance Learning Faculty Services, the $1,000 revision fee.  Written requests for early revision may be made to cladams@mtsu.edu.
