Learning Modules



The Teaching Excellence Series offer faculty-led workshops that focus on topics to improve teaching and learning effectiveness.  The goal of this series is to provide a foundation from which faculty can both share and receive innovative, helpful, and interesting teaching practices to be used across all disciplines.

Student Learning Outcomes

This interactive module covers definitions of Student Learning Outcomes (SLO’s) as well as how to write SLO’s and why they are important in aiding students in learning and faculty in teaching.

Rubrics

This interactive module covers the definition of rubrics, features common to rubrics, tips for creating appropriate rubrics for specific learning tasks, and includes online resources for building rubrics from templates or from scratch.
Syllabus Preparation
This interactive module covers what a syllabus is, how syllabi can aid student learning in the classroom, where to begin in writing an effective syllabus, what to include in an effective syllabus, and includes several online resources for building effective syllabi for the university classroom.

Course Design
This interactive module covers important aspects of course design, five principles of good course design, some suggestions for the design of online courses, and includes some resources for enhancing course design.

Discussion Techniques
This interactive module covers some positives and negatives about class discussion, several methods to encourage discussion in large classes, some pointers for small group discussion, and includes some resources for building discussion activities.

Teaching Creative Thinking Skills

This interactive module covers the definition of creative thinking, some effective strategies for teaching creative thinking skills, and includes some resources for teaching creative thinking skills.

Assessment

This interactive module covers the purpose of classroom assessment techniques, some characteristics that are specific to classroom assessment, and includes some resources for building different kinds of assessment devices.

Building Confidence in Teaching

This interactive module covers several ways to help build confidence in teaching and includes some resources for building confidence in teaching.

Enjoying Teaching

This interactive module covers aspects of an outstanding teacher, helping students to enjoy learning, some risks faced by college teachers that may attribute to less enjoyment in the classroom, and includes some resources for making teaching more enjoyable.

Organization and Structure

This interactive module covers the purpose of organization and structure in the classroom, some classroom structures that encourage student participation, some ways to establish and communicate structure, and includes some resources for building course structure.
