Marc Barr -

  • I currently have my work in a national show at the Pottworks Gallery in Hamilton Michigan.

  • My grad class is working up four pieces for Doug Williams of the MTSU Development Office. They are for broadcast and the web for recruiting purposes. My 3120 class for spring is going to be again working with Leadership Rutherford to produce videos for a non profit organization. This year it is Special Kids of Rutherford County, a non profit organization that assists children and families of special needs children.

  • I'm working with the SIGGRAPH 2009 Conference as part of the Community Outreach program with the Algiers Technical Academy, a high school, to develop a computer graphics facility for the school and with a group of the students and faculty to create videos, interviews and documentation of the conference for their peers.  I have also been nominated for two different positions in the SIGGRAPH organization, Director for Education and Director at Large

Tom Berg-Working on research study on minority ownership patterns.

Clare Bratten -

  • Currently doing an Honors lecture, on Imagining a Nation: Kurdistan of Iraq and Problems with the Documentary Form."  

  • I am also working on a documentary on Kurdistan and Kurds' ideas about being in Iraq.


Bob Gordon - Working on professional television production featuring the Chieftains.

Chris Harris -

  • Working on a revision of my textbook "Visual Journalism." The new edition will be entirely electronic to both lessen the cost to the student and allow more ancillary materials.

  • In edition I am working on a photo book on my forty year coverage of the Natchez (MS) Pilgrimage and reviewing papers for the Journal of Mass Media Ethics.

Jackie Heigle - Working on production of “Southwest Tour” from last summer.


Roger Heinrich -

  • Doing weekly voice work for the Titans Radio Network.

  • Working on revising an article that was "accepted with revisions" for Scientific Journals International and working on a book review for American Journalism of “Sounds of Change: A History of FM Broadcasting in America."


Tom Jimison -Preparing an exhibit of his work for exhibition in Mexico.


Michael Johnson - Working on Nashville public schools project and a program on Black Divas for PBS through a Music School grant.


Robert Kalwinsky -

  • Published a paper earlier this year:  “Western Worms!  Explication of Aspects of Healthcare Behavior Among Chamorro with HIV/AIDS” published in the Journal of Transcultural Health and Nursing.  January 2008, Sage Publications, 19 (1):55-63.

  • I was also awarded a fellowship to attend the Disney-ABC Digital Media Summit, sponsored by the IRTS.

  • I am presently working on three other papers: “The Complex Intersection of Western and Indigenous Health Belief Systems: Ethical Dilemmas,” a paper evaluating ACEJMC research with Drs. Oneal and Applegate, and a new media paper tentatively entitled “Anime’s Influence on Cinematic Narratives”


Mary Nichols -

  • Editing a chair-making documentary after completing faculty development grant in August 2008. 

  • Also editing a Synergy Grant project, "Convention Singing and Shape Notes" which I hope to finish by January 2009. 

  • I am also putting together a project with NASA for Fall 2009.


Dennis Oneal
- Preliminary work on emergency communication system in Tennessee.


Bob Pondillo -

  • I'm completing my book on early network TV censorship for Southern Illinois University Press.  It should be out by the fall of 2009.

  • I'm working on my new short film: The New, True, Charlie Wu.  We're in pre-production now and plan to shoot it during spring break, 2009.  It's our most ambitious -- and so our most difficult -- short film yet!

  • I'm doing a brown bag on Oct. 20 for the American Democracy Foundation (many Profs on campus are also).  My topic is "How Media News Conventions Harm our Democracy."


Jan Quarles -

  • My students are working on websites, some to be implemented in the community Chapter on Cambodia in a book supposed to be out in the fall.

  • Working with MA student in Australia.

  • Working on further research on cultural products and UNESCO

  • Applying for teaching grants overseas

  • Doing accreditation visit to Baylor in Waco, Texas


Bob Spires -

  • "Selling America Through the Super Bowl" article with Hugh O'Donnell now in submission in Europe. 

  • Exchange agreement with Communication University of China in progress-both graduate and undergraduate level. 

  • Honor Lecture on "Politics, Non-Traditional Media and Young Voters" on November 10.  I will be a Visiting Scholar again in China next spring. 

  • I am Chair of an Honors College Committee to plan and establish an Honors Living and Learning Center at a partner university in the United Kingdom.

  • Published "America at Play-America at War: The Super Bowl as Discursive Formation" (with Hugh O'Donnell)

  • Presented "Teaching in China: Opportunities, expectations and realities" at the 2009 Tennessee Consortium on International Studies

  • Serves on MTSU Global Competency Committee, College of Mass Comm. Internationalization Committee and the EMC SMARTI Awards Committee


JenniferWoodard - Program Chair for AEJ division for diversity.



Guanping Zheng
- I am working on a brochure for Study Abroad exchange students for the University.  I will be teaching for three months in China while out on my NIA (non-instructional assignment) project for the Spring semester.
