Memorial Design Information

The MTSU Veterans Memorial Committee initiated planning for this project in late 2003. Project funding came from the MTSU Foundation's Special Projects Committee and contributions from MTSU alumni and community organizations. The university dedicated the memorial site in front of the Tom Jackson Building on November 10, 2007 and Rehorn & Kelly, Inc. completed the construction in 2009.

Our architect, Garry Askew (Bauer-Askew Architecture, PLLC), completed a design based upon committee input. The memorial stands in remembrance of those from the MTSU community who have fallen in the line of duty and to all those who have served. The wall contains the names of MTSU's fallen veterans on one side, and each fallen veteran has a star honoring them on the opposite side. Beside this constellation of stars are the words, "To support and defend the Constitution"; as a reminder of the campus commitment to serve the community and the country. The memorial also includes a plaza for campus events, including commissioning ceremonies, and a place for quiet reflection or study. The original design sketches for the project may be viewed here.

At the annual MTSU Salute to Veterans Game each November, the campus community holds a memorial service on the site and engraves the names of any MTSU alum who has perished during the previous year. Additionally during this event, special engraved bricks purchased by friends and families to honor any veteran are placed in the plaza.
