Community Reading Program

Each year a book is chosen for summer reading for freshmen and the MTSU and Murfreesboro communities. During CUSTOMS, all incoming freshmen and transfer students receive packets that include a reading guide for that summer’s selection, information about the author, and a list of course selections using the book selection for the fall. The author of the book is traditionally brought to campus as the convocation speaker.

The objectives of the program are to:

• Provided a unifying experience for the entering class of students,
• Partner with the Murfreesboro community organizations,
• Encourage intellectual interaction among students,
• Provide students with the opportunity to read and personally interact with critically-acclaimed authors, and
• Affirm the importance of reading to a successful and fulfilling life.
