| Module 1: College Advising Academic Support Center - Undeclared Majors Academic Advisor An academic advisor is a member of a team of advisors who serve undeclared and special populations of students. Advisors work with entering students in the university’s orientation program (CUSTOMS), assist with schedule planning, major selection, and learning communities. Additionally, they use intrusive and non-intrusive advising strategies with their assigned case loads, participating in evaluation of advising services, participating in professional development, and assisting with special projects at the direction of the Director of the Academic Support Center. Intrusive advising strategies are: e-mails, phone contacts and personal contacts. Examples of non-intrusive advising strategies include: University 1010 presentation. Staff Expectations These expectations will guide each staff member through their daily operations and interactions with students and their parents. - We will provide the highest possible service to our students and their families. This means that when a problem is brought to us, we will follow the problem until its logical conclusion. We will assume that even when another office is responsible for the problem, we are still responsible for the solution.
- No matter how difficult it may be, and regardless of whether the person deserves it, every person we deal with will be shown the highest degree of ethical and courteous treatment. Every person will be treated fairly and respectfully.
- We work together as a unit to serve our students. Every person contributes to the work of the unity by cooperating within the unit and modeling cooperative behavior to members of the university community outside the unit.
- In every decision we make, we are acting as stewards of resources provided by our students, their families and the taxpayers. Stewardship must be practiced with the highest degree of integrity.
- We best serve our students, their families and the taxpayers by remembering that our primary function is to enact the University’s Academic Master Plan. We will structure our work to achieve the following objective:
- We will teach students to lead by creating and supporting a structure that gives them the opportunity to lead and to model the behavior of competent leaders.
- We will teach students to serve by showing them both how to serve and that service is central to the concept of committed citizenry.
- We will teach students to resolve conflicts respectfully and appropriately. This includes a commitment to reject violent behavior at whatever level it is encountered.
- We will teach students to function collaboratively by modeling collaborative behavior with all members of the university community.
- We will teach students to participate as committed citizens of the community by providing structure for self-governance and allowing that structure to function in practice as well as in theory.
- We will teach students to execute task to completion by holding students accountable to the same high standards by which we judge our own performance.
