| Module 1: College Advising
General Education Program Issues concerning the General Education Program form the core of the work advisors do in the Academic Support Center. The General Education Program helps provide students with the common, hallmark qualities of an educated person. These include skills and knowledge that are the foundation for an academic major and a future career. The General Education Program is one-third of a student's requirements for the baccalaureate degree. The courses provide the general knowledge and skills that open into the specific major of study. The General Education curriculum provides a student with the knowledge and skills to be a life-long learner who can adapt to an ever-changing workplace. American businesses spend billions each year on training, and general education courses make MTSU graduates flexible and able to change in an increasingly diverse and internationalized economy. General Education professors teach critical and logical thinking, communications skills of writing, speaking, and listening, and skills for locating and gathering information. Through math and science courses, they teach a basis for understanding the physical world. Other General Education courses help students develop an appreciation of art and cultures, a broad understanding of history, a basis for making sound ethical/moral judgments, and the ability to maintain physical and mental health. Overall, they teach the skills to participate responsibly in one's natural, social and political environments. General Education Requirements In preparation for assisting a student with scheduling for the upcoming semester, the advisor should thoroughly review the student’s completed course history and note those courses that satisfy the requirements of the general education program. To accomplish this task, an advisor uses the Student Information System and a General Education Requirement Sheet. More information about the SIS system will come later in this manual. A sample of the general education sheet is below and copies can be found in the ASC. Be sure to review the sheet with the student and explain the courses they are eligible to take. Be aware of the courses that require prerequisites such as Academic Enrichment.
