Welcome

The College comprises six academic departments offering thirteen undergraduate academic majors and the secondary education minor. The administrative units of the College include the Dean’s Office, the Associate Dean for Teacher Education, and the Office of Professional Laboratory Experiences. The principle function of these offices is to facilitate the day-to-day operation of the College, and to coordinate admission to teacher education, student teaching, and teacher licensure. The College Advising Office provides undergraduate program information and assistance to students who have declared a major within the College. All units within the College endeavor to provide assistance to students through a student-centered learning environment.

Since its beginning in 1911, the primary purpose of Middle Tennessee State Normal School has been the preparation of teacher educators. The current mission of the College of Education and Behavioral Science continues that tradition. In addition to the mission of teacher education programs, the College has broadened its scope of instruction to include several academic programs within the realm of the behavioral sciences. The six academic departments are the Department of Criminal Justice Administration, the Department of Educational Leadership, the Department of Elementary and Special Education, the Department of Health and Human Performance, the Department of Human Sciences, and the Department of Psychology.

The specific objectives of the College of Education and Behavioral Science are to coordinate the teacher education programs of the University and prepare teachers who are reflective decision-makers; to provide professional courses in the preparation of teachers and school personnel; to provide programs and services for teachers and personnel already in service; and to provide appropriate experiences in the arts and behavioral sciences which contribute to a liberal education or for careers in these fields.

All academic units within the College of Education and Behavioral Science offer a variety of programs that seek to prepare graduates to be competitive in the respective discipline-related professions.
