The Robert W. McLean School of Music offers programs leading to the Bachelor of Music degree. Students may choose from seven majors: Instrumental Music Education, Vocal/General Music Education K-12, Voice Performance, Instrumental Performance, Music Industry, Theory-Composition, and Jazz Studies. The Robert W. McLean School of Music is the first “All-Steinway School in Tennessee.”

To be admitted into the Bachelor of Music degree program, all entering students must pass an audition before the faculty on their major instrument or voice. Students who do not pass the audition may be allowed, at the discretion of the faculty, to enroll in private music lessons or class instruction for one semester only. At the end of the semester, the student must re-audition for admission into the program.

All new or transfer undergraduate majors and minors are required to take the Music Theory and Aural Skill Diagnostic Exam. This exam will determine the appropriate placement in the music theory program. Students may not enroll in any music theory course until the exam is taken.

The School of Music publishes a student handbook that serves as the official document for the School of Music. The handbook states degree requirements, school policies and procedures. The School of Music monitors all music classes for their students and will permit all music majors and minors into music classes.

Instrumental Music Education K-12 prepares students to teach instrumental music in the elementary and secondary school systems. Students must be admitted to the Teacher Licensure program with a 2.5 GPA or better.

Vocal/General Music Education K-12 prepares students to teach voice/vocal groups in the elementary and secondary schools. Students must be admitted to the Teacher Licensure program with a 2.5 GPA or better.

Voice Performance prepares students for careers in singing. Voice Performance majors need to establish proficiency in Italian, French or German, equivalent to two semesters of language study at MTSU. Students are required to take three (3.0) credit hours in a SECOND foreign language, Italian, French or German. Voice performance majors also need to take the four (4) semester sequence of diction (English/Latin, Italian, German, French).

Instrumental Performance – Brass, Orchestral String, Woodwinds, and Percussion; Guitar, Piano, and Organ – prepares students to become professional musicians in specific music areas and for graduate studies.

Music Industry prepares students for careers in music-related business and industry.

Theory-Composition prepares students to develop the necessary techniques and self-expression to create new music in numerous media and styles.

Jazz Studies prepares students to analyze and arrange various combinations of instruments and voice.
